I thought I would post up some pictures and a little report from our tournament. Its not my intention to hijack the thread but this seemed like an appropriate place to post this.

The week started out with a bang on Thursday. After his poop-squeezing and de-eyeballing duties were complete, my oldest son went flounder fishing at the dock. I hear "dad, im hooked up" and ran to him with the net, this was the result... We stuffed it with crab meat Friday night and it was unbelievable. 6.83#

Friday was not great for us. Hunter was feeling a little rough and one of the other crewmembers was suffering from staying out until 2:00 in the morning. Despite being in the same area where the majority of the fish were caught, we had no legitimate shots at sails. We lost an 8# mahi at the boat, released a remora, got picked to death by small dolphin and that was it.

I was tempted to leave the kids at home on Saturday, but they bucked up and insisted on going, tough little bastards. We all met at the dock a 6:00 and the entire crew had a great attitude. We got to where we wanted to be and waited a little for lines in. We found a wad of bait off the ledge a little bit and away from the fleet and decided to work it. At about 8:15, we had a fish come into the left long, then fade to the right long. I dropped back to it and it started jumping…. Just as I was pushing up the drag we saw the bait fly from its mouth, it was not meant to be. About 40 minutes later, we had a nice bite on the right short. The boat owner and newbie circle hook angler executed a perfect “point and shoot”, let it run in free-spool and then slowly eased up on the drag, resulting in a solid hookup. We transferred the rod to my youngest son, Evan, and backed down on the fish, which we released at 9:05. Our usual photographer wanted to leader the fish so we don’t have any real good shots of this fish other than what is on the tournament camera, which I have not seen yet.

About 10:20 or so, we had another great bite on the shotgun rod… after a brief dropback, we were hooked up with a bigger sail. I handed the rod to one of my best friends Eric, who, despite fishing with me all the time had never managed to catch a billfish. As we cleared the spread, the fish came close to spooling the tld 30. We backed down on this one and got it close to the boat where it went as ballistic as any sail I have caught. We had it on the leader and it decided it wanted to attack the dredge dangling in the water and actually hit the dredge rod. Here are a few shots of the fish somewhat close to the boat.

We had at least two more legitimate bites that day, probably more like four or five, but nothing else connected. We fished hard until the end of the tournament knowing we were still in the hunt.
We got back to the dock and had a little creeking to do… here is a shot of the munchkin going in. An interesting note that my oldest son and my youngest son each caught their first billfish on July 30th, one year apart from each other.

Guys… this is a great tournament where the little guys can go out and go toe to toe with the big boys and have a legitimate chance of winning the thing. I have fished just about every tournament in the governor’s cup and many others during the last several years and this one ranks as one of my top three favorites. Its fun, low stress and a good chance to enjoy some fishing with good friends and family somewhat nearshore. I can’t wait until next year. All in all, I think something like 29 fish were released by the fleet which is almost 5 times as many as last year.
Congratulations to the Chicken Ship for their win with three sails and thank you to Lee, Trip, Kit and all the others that make it happen.

Thanks for the report Lee and WW

We got out and fished with the fleet Friday and thought we had it going until we realized the tournement camera was back at the house. Ended up with one #5 lb dolphin and a remora. I noticed the old outboard was sounding kinda rough but just got it back from the shop so i tought it would be fine getting us back in.

Started heading out Saturday and the motor was sounding realy rough but we went anyway because it was tourny time. It was a great looking morning until she went out about 16 miles from the beach. Lost all gear but she would run. I felt really bad for the crew because we didnt get to fish. But we had the cameras and were ready.

Took the boat back to the mechanic and he said that the lower unit blew up. It was the pinion gear gone out on a remanufactured lower unit 3years old??

O well this was my third EH tourny and no sails yet
    There is always next year?

O by the way wahoo i still owe you a beer from the captains meeting.

Thanks so much for your effort and continued support with the Capt. Eddy. I am truly sorry for all the trouble you had this year, that stinks. Thanks to every one and there support, we were able to raise a bunch of money for the Flemings.

Were you the person I talked to on the radio that didn't have their camera? I know so many by their board name here, but not by boat name and sometime real name, we should have a get together one day so we get to know each other...

Yes that was me that you talked to on the radio the first day of the tournement that forgot the camera.
We should get together soon. I got the lower unit replaced and am back on the water. Have you ever heard of that happining to a outboard? And it was only three years old.

She will be ready for the rock jetty in November so if you see those trout before me tell them to watch out.

    How are the Flemings doing?
