I was cleaning a deer the other morning and thought why the hell not. I've cured skins of ducks and pheasant before for tying and painting reference and any fool can do it.
Take the tail and cut at the base. You'll see the bone and muscle in the middle. Take a razorblade and cut down the middle on the white. Work your way around the sides and separate the skin from the meat.
be careful or you'll cut it in a few pieces.
scrape all of the meat off of the skin and be careful not to cut yourself or through the skin. You'll now see that it looks just like the bucktails you buy at the store.
Take it and tack it to a piece of wood with some nails.
Then apply Borax soap or salt to all of the skin and tissue. I used salt this time, but have typically used borax soap.
Place it somewhere your animals wont find it and wait till it dries out. Shouldn't take long. When It's done drying I put it in a tupperware container and keep it in the ffreezer just in case some of the meat isn't cured.
Good luck....don't cut yourself.
Don't know how to dye them.
