I have caught a tog on a fly before but it was strictly by accident. Don't believe a tog on the fly is a good match up. You have to set the hook fast and they will go back into the rocks and you may end up losing your fly line or get it messed up. Crab flies can be used for other species. But who is to say. If you are willing to loose some line and want to give it a shot do it.
I believe it would be very difficult to get the fly down on the botton close to the rocks. You would need to have fly weighted like a clouser and have heavy sinking line which the combination is asking for trouble with the rocks and your fly line.

I thought the same ray. as much weight as you normally use for tog it would be a trick to get it down to the fish. Still I guess it could be done. I've got a fly fishing friend who keeps syaing there are so many open IGFA tog records especially on fly.
Here's something I made out of foam many moons ago. The legs are knotted rubber bands. The whole thing is based on the "Hover Crab" pattern. I added dumbell eyes my the hook eye.
I have no idea how this thing floats, or if it would work, but I have about 6 of them sitting around.
Some day I will have to seriously try some crab flies. I hear great things about them and see them catch in Fla on TV. It has been truthfully years since I last put one on the line. I just find it hard to put one one.
Guess I will have to be out with someone, sometime and see them catch on them to try them. I know fish eat crabs, but have never really seen them first hand feeding on them. It wold also feel weird to throw a fly and then not strip it back like a normal fly.
Still waiting to catch my first fish on a crab fly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
