Bucktail tying thread?
I'm looking for a good thick, strong thread for tying bucktails and spoon hooks for stripers. I've been tying seawitches and bucktails for a while with gudebrod floss but its hard to incorporate tinsel and flashabou in parachute jigs with the floss and i thought thread might be a lot easier. If anyone has a recommendation on a type of thread to use that would be great.

Tying thread
Since I'm both a commercial fly tyer and a lure maker when I'm not guiding, here's what I use for bucktails.... Go to any fly shop that carries materials and ask for Danville's Flat waxed nylon. It will come in 100yd spools that are just the right size to mount in a standard fly tying bobbin. The flat-waxed nylon is strong enough for any jig tying purposes and it comes in every color under the sun, particularly fluorescent colors. Here's a sample of some of the work I do with the stuff...

As each lure is finished I touch the thread with a tiny drop of super glue for serious durability.

Thanks for the tip, I actually have already been using that exact thread for awhile but I wasn't sure if maybe there was some thicker stuff out there. Thanks for the help.

Threads
There probably are some thicker threads available but when I'm going heavier I just start using 6 or 8lb mono (and since it's all used line the stuff is free). Funny thing about tying thread, though. The finer the thread the more actual pressure you put on the materials because of the additional turns you use. Some years back when I was teaching fly tying locally I'd have my students wind a few turn of thread around a finger. Most were astonished at how quickly the pressure of a few windings built up....

Hmm, thats interesting. I never really thought about the added pressure of the thinner stuff. Thanks for explaining, I might try mono on bigger parachutes and bucktails. Those are some beauties you got tied up in the pics by the way.

bucktails
I guarantee my flies and jigs to catch..... anglers. With the exception of the pilchard jig (as they're called these days in 1oz at the top) everything is designed for the backcountry of the Everglades. That's where I am most days, see report just posted on the florida fishing reports board "Everglades days, Biscayne nights".

Looks like you got some good fishing down there at the time. I do quite a bit of inshore fishing around the lake worth inlet and around the flats in the winter and I have yet to keep a tarpon hooked up. I think my longest fight on one was around 10lbs and lasted about 6 minutes when it ended it by throwing my mirrorlure back at me. Good luck on future trips.

Some manufacturers are using a thin monofilament like thread.
