I don't fly fish, but as an alternative to a wire trace, you can try fluoro in the 60 lb range. Has worked good for me with the spinning gear.

Flies tied with circle hooks are fantastic for big blues..

Long shank hooks would be # 2 on the list

I don't like wire because most other fish will stay away...

i use 30 lb flouro in the chesapeake . with small blues isnt a problem. on the larger boys i would use wire or go with the long shank kooks tied at the bend. i am not a fan of circle hooks but they are good and do their job.

For big blues only, I cheat an put on a 6 inch wire leader. The ones you buy in pack. They are thin and have a clip on the end and a swivel on the other. Work well and cast fairly well. Found even stripers will hit the flies on the wire too. Only use them when I have lost a number of flies and know there are big gator blues around. Either way the flies get chewed to death along with the wire.

Thanks, Ray. I'll give that a try.
