Black Drum fishing at the CBBT

Fished the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel dregding for stripers. Everyonce in awhile on these trips we hook fish that we cannot turn in the strong current and eventually break us off on a piling or rocks. Took the big stick (12wt Crosscurrent) out and luckily I hooked one of these beasts and got him to the boat. Turns out,our mystery fish is a black drum. Landed this guy in about 10 minutes, he put up a great fight. Definitely not just dead weight like alot of people say they are. Released him and on the next cast hooked his big brother. Not so lucky with him. Had him turned for about 2 or 3 minutes. Went to tighten my drag, and I guess he sensed that I had let off a bit and he turned and took off. Seconds later he broke me off on a piling. But overall a decent evening out on the bay. Caught him on a 6" Chartruese/white seaducer on a 400 grain sinking line.

Great night of fishing. Don't think of Black Drum when you think about fly fishing, but I am sure it was a nice fight.

You guys are welcome to come down and give it a try sometime. They are normally here most of the summer. That article was written by my buddy Kendall, the guy in the picture with the big drum is the guy that I was was fishing with that evening. I agree CapeMayRay, you normally don't think of them as targets for fly, it is a fishery that is really starting to take off down here. During the day, you can actually sight fish to them around the rocks, very cool.
