As for your question...I don't think there is 1 one fly...Clouser pattern is what I guess I would go with...will catch most everything.
the most important factor in fly selection is that you have confidence in what you have on the end of your line. if you feel that your fly will work you will fish it harder. but you will find a clouser on my line 80 percent of the time.

i was just trying to figure out what most poeple use... well about me, i love to fish. i am now trying to fly fish as much as i can. i live in ocean city, maryland.
No one magic fly. Been using deceiver types flyes most this year. They work on Sinking, intermediate and floating line and suspend well when you want to work them slow. Jiggies always work well with the longer shank hooks you get less bite offs with the blues. You really do not need a ton of flies to be successful fly fishing. A few different types in basic colors and you are good to go.
To catch in saltwater you have to learn to think like the fish and ask yourself where I be on a give tide and time of day. Even the best flies will not catch if the fish are not there.
Try and get as many things in your favor as you can.
I vote for the clouser as well. Even here the keys we throw them at bonefish and tarpon.Although we throw a bunch of other stuff, the clouser would be my one if I could only have one.
