    Back to Basics

Didn't know where else to put this, but since I was holding a fly rod, here it is...

Dad started us out on bream with our fly rods before we graduated to trout streams and I still try to hit'em on their beds once a year. He had the foresight to start us an easy fish with no trees in your backcast so we wouldn't let "learning" take away from "fishing". Still fun to fight on a light rod and tasty little buggers.

Saturday evening I slipped off to the north end of Lake Norman to a little island and got a little slime on my new yak. The tubers were finally going home and other than the ospreys, I had most of it to myself.

New yak handles better than I dreamed, wide and stable and plenty of room. Wilderness Systems makes a great boat and the Ride 135 is awesome, if a little heavy.

I took a quick release Cabelas rod holder I had laying around, applied Roto-zip to the belly, and now have a flip down fly-rod holder on the Scotty mount.

Third cast, first of 12 comes to the boat, first on the yak -photo'd for posterity.

Him and eight of his little buddies put up a good fight, then swam in the skillet a little later.

Not salt water, and not trophies but still a blast...
