April Fishing Reports From Cape May

Weather has been still pretty cold. With the water even in the back bays still in the 40's I haven't been in a rush to put the boat in the slip. Will be launching tomorrow so I will be ready to fish when we get a couple of warm days. It should be happening soon. I did hear of some stripers caught on bait along the beach front so action should start soon.

Even the local freshwater lakes are still pretty cold. There was a better bite a couple of weeks ago when the water in the lakes was warmer. Did get a few fish this weekend but you had to work for them and make sure you hooked. Had three hits and three fish.

Hope to be reporting a striper on the fly soon.

Launched the boat for the season

Got the boat in this afternoon. It was real nice this morning but by afternoon we had 25 to 30 and gusting out of the northeast. Got a bit wet getting to my marina and had a tough time getting new lines and shackles on with all the wind and doing it by myself. Got it done though. Could do any other work on the boat as rain and thunderstorms came shortly after that. Now just waiting for the first nice day and tides. Hope to report the first striper on the fly for the season soon.

Still nothing to report. Got out on the first personal fly trip this week. It was warm and nice out till I left the dock and headed for the inlet to fish the rocks. A heavy fog rolled in and it was cold and damp and with the water 49 degrees you could see vapor when you breathed. To get away from the cold after working it for a couple of hours, with no hits, I headed to the back bay where the water was a little warmer but before the tide started out a front came along with strong winds and rain chasing me off the water.

No fishing since as it has been windy, cold with some rain, with this weekend some nasty weather predicted. Just need some warm days to get things going. Hope to have that first striper on the fly soon. It has been a long winter.

Water is still pretty cold for fly fishing and the wind has not cut us much of a break. It has to change soon, so in the mean time I been having some fun on the fly with the freshwater fish. Largemouth bass and pickerel have been hitting pretty good on Mickey Finn flies yellow/orange in local Cape May County Lakes.
