Yes my friends, i can feel it coming...a soft rumbling that's slowly made it's way from distant waters south and west of our current position...a large, contemplative hand that sweeps warm blue water and hordes of greatness before it...the current we have missed for almost two years is back with appartent vengance...and i can hardly sleep because of it...
Capt Herk and i have tentatively checked Terrafin daily...secretly hoping the wall of purple blue water we knew was out there would dare to move in...we argured the timing was late...or early...but truthfully neither of us really knew...how could we? the lord works in mysterious ways...who are we to question if the fish gods work any differently...
Today...thanks to clearer weather and the science faction's latest endeavor...we have better news...and it looks as though a massive slab of blue, productive water has arrived, potentially with enough momentum behind it to kick start this big fish season in a historic way...time will tell...but i have seen these conditions arise before...and many of you have the memories to prove it...
We fished on Monday...after a productive night of bait fishing for a change...we set off towards el banco where reports warned of green water but brightened with mention of tuna...and some nice ones at that...
We arrive to find flat seas and unpopulated waters...it's nice to have the place to yourself once in a while...we tried vainly to make a few skipjack or bullet tunas...negativo...so to the kite we went with live caballitos while we deep dropped jigs...on the first drift Alex and the boys nail an assortment of players...including jacks and bonafide yellowfin tunas...they were some hungry ones around...we had our hands full at one point as Mike hooks a 100# yellowfin on an extra light bait fishing stick...we battle the fish for over an hour only to lose it right at leader when the minature treble hook on the jig straightens out...well, you can't win them all...back to the kite and we manage to score another nice one right away...
At several points throughout the day the fish would explode around the boat...driving bait schools to the surface where fish from 50 - 150#'s catapulted through the water in effort to eat them...it was a great show although i felt we should have been catching more fish given the action...pinche agua verde...or something to that effect...
We certainly missed a few on the kite while trolling...and Alex's maurader did account for a solid 75#er...rigged for wahoo with heavy wire it's not every day one of el banco's finest fall for that kind of mockery...
When the usual mid-day lull hit the bank i decided to run to corbetania where day-making afternoon bites are known to happen...well...not on monday...we arrived to find even greener water and i counted five lonely tunas cruising lazily below the swells...not good, i'm thinking...NEVER LEAVE FISH FOR FISH...words from my grandfater that continue to haunt me...particularly on days when it doesn't pay off...
The important thing is there is a solid population of fish out there...and now, by the looks of things...they are going to get a lot of new friends and some cleaner water to play with...
We're officially off to make bait tomorrow evening...and then out with Bogii and Steve friday and saturday...clients from the 4-Seasons on Sunday, then a week straight with the big guy and the family...followed by July's madness...and so it starts...
The next few weeks down here are going to get interesting...
