Anyone that fishes saltwater and doesn’t live underneath a rock is definitely feeling the effects of the weather we have been having lately. From mid-February we went from freezing temps to shorts and sandals. Crazy to say the least and looks like no break in sight. I think Mother Nature is dealing us April weather in March and May weather will replace April’s weather? Who knows? Definitely not the weatherman! Mardi-Gras is around the corner and so is spring. Warmer temps and slightly warmer water offshore has given us a tiny taste of good things to come. The wahoo fishing this winter has been a cat and mouse game for sure. When the moon and stars align the fish have been averaging right around 45-50lbs with larger models in the mix. For the most part the usual suspects have been responsible for them, CDR-30’s, Islander/ballyhoo and X-raps to name a few. Color hasn’t really played a significant part like it normally does, just a matter of being at the right place at the right time. Tuna fishing right now is pretty solid to say the least. The inshore bite on the larger models might not get you a few bites per day but they are big fish. On 2/17 we had a 204lb yellow just for example. The nice alternative is the floater option. The water last weekend was 71 degrees and cobalt blue. Fish are smaller but plentiful. Ranging 30-50lbs. These fish have been taking everything from Frenzy poppers and Angry jigs, to livies, chunks, naked ballyhoo and trolled 111MR Mirror lures. I have been fishing them on the Torsa’s and Talica’s to make it even more fun. As we get closer to putting March behind us live bait such as tinkers and bullet mackerel will make their presence known and it won’t be long until we will be enjoying the spoils of summer. Until then, I would like to order up another round of big hoo’s and slob tuna. I have some primo days in April available as well as a few left in March. Give me a buzz. Enjoy a few pics from the last few weeks. See ya!
