We fished Super Bowl Sunday and Feb. 1st. This time last year the large Yellow-fin had moved in and people were getting shots this whole week last year at 200+lbs YF. It seems that the trend was to continue. We got out early Sunday morning and set to trolling rigs and bottom structure for Wahoo. Since the tuna bite has been later rather than sooner we put some time in trolling for the "hooters". As luck would have it we got covered up with black-fin a couple of times so we continued the search a little farther than we anticipated. It paid off with one nice Wahoo and one good knock down. After some more trolling we put the shaky baits up and turned the boat towards the tuna grounds.
Upon arriving there where several boats on location with a few catching. We made several drifts and picked through the "bo-bo's" and kings to catch a nice 50lbs Yellow-fin. After a few more drifts we got covered up with big sharks. Duskys, Silkys and Black tips. That's when one of the customers yelled YELLOW-FIN. I looked down to see several Stud Yellow-fin sucking up the chunks like it was there last meal. We put several large pieces of Black-fin in the water and placed hooks in 3 of them. Fish on. Fish on. Fish on. IT was controlled chaos for a while. We managed to get the first fish close to the boat and it was immediately attacked by the surrounding sharks. This has only happened to us a hand full of times. My guess is that the sharks were mad at the Yellow-fin for hogging all the chum! After we snatched the injured YF from the sharks and put it on the boat, we put the engines in gear and spooked the toothy critters outta there. Shortly after that we boated the other two fish. All in the 130-150lbs range. We decided to head to the barn because the boys in black in gold were about to put a whooping on the colts. We made it to the house boat just as opening kick off was in the air.
The Next day we had a great group of guys from the Rockport,TX area. These guys are known as "team Mako". They fished with capt. trey the previous day and managed to kill a beautiful mako. That morning we left the dock around 8:00 seeing as how we had to celebrate the biggest "W" in saints history!! We skipped the wahoo part and went strait to tuna fishing. The wind was for-casted to pick up in the after noon and they nailed it on the head. After a drift with no takers we set up a little of the main "hole" and were rewarded with a large blue shark(MAKO). Capt. Rimmer hooked a Black-fin carcass on the air craft cable and paid it out. After a few minutes we thought the big girl was gone. Just as Capt. Rimmer was pulling it back in she showed up and inhaled the bait. I ran to the throttles and hammered it forward to make sure we got a good hook set. Once she got settled in we went to work on her. After 15 Min's. or so she decided she didn't wanna play any more and tried to play like a drunk seagull. She made a total of 6 jumps. The last was a little close for comfort and got the camera wet! She also managed to land on the main line and part it! From what we heard on the radio every boat out there hooked up on a mako! I don't know why these fish decided to come in and play but i love it. They are the APEX predator of the gulf and nothing to shake a stick at! IF you are not fully prepared to hook, land, kill and boat one i wouldn't suggest fooling with it. After a lot of high fives we set back to start tuna fishing again. The wind began to pick up and so did the fishing. After a slow start to the drift a large black bullet with long yellow sickles rolled through the slick. And then another. And another. We put a hook in 3 total but only managed to land one in the 160 class. The wind was really pumping by now and the guys already had to go buy extra ice chest so we headed to the hill!
It was a great two days of fishing with great friends, food and football. We have an amazing lodge with a full time chef(A-train). We can accommodate up to 16 people very comfortably and will do everything we can to make sure you have the trip of a life time. The fishing is only going to get better in the coming weeks. Give us a call to get on the books while there is still space. 504.343.7372 www.mgfishing.com
