This past trip saw us getting back to the wide open lure fishing that we saw late last season. Bait is extremely difficult to catch right now with this past full moon and la nina cold water conditions. Most of what we took outside for bait we caught ourselves with cast nets in the marina and most of what we caught was mullet. Tried trolling up some skipjacks or bullet tuna but the water around the islands was muddy and green. No bueno for bait fishing.
Thankfully, after missing three quick fish on what small live mullets we had I decided to go back to the basics of plastic and threw out three Archer bars and two Yo-Zuri bonitas. It didn't take long...
First pass through the nearest tuna school produced a double on the bars, and it went naughty from there. Nothing like watching these fish detonate on the topwater stuff. Time and time again the Archer bars called them up and then the Yo-zuris took a beating shortly thereafter. My voice was literally hoarse from screaming "HOLY CHIT DID YOU JUST SEE THAT!" over and over again.
Awesome tuna fishing a loooooooong way from the cold nastiness that we left behind in Canada and Chicago respectively.
Here's a few pics of the action from Kristin's camera. For some reason mine is not downloading at the moment...trying to figure that out as we speak.
We've got a few days off and then we're right back at it again, time to surf and enjoy the solid NW swell that's just arrived from, you guessed it, Canada!
