Met Captian Lora and Mate Largo at the boat shortly after seven. I was a bit foggy eyed from the previous evening of enjoyment with my girlfriend. We are having a blast down here. Anyhow, we get around the point here in Punta Mita and its a little breezy and overcast but seems totally doable to make the 60 mile run out in Lora's 28 foot panga.
So we get out to the tuna grounds and we dont really see much of anything going on for about the first hour or so. Then the captian finds a school. I have never gotten a tuna fish on a popper so I tell him Im going to focus on that. Lora and Largo throw a few livies in and they are engulfed instantly. So we end up with three on, I take one and the boys are taking the other two. I think that first must of produced five YFT inthe 60-80 lb range.
As the day went on, it wouldn't take long for Captain Lora or Largo to locate other schools. Many times, the visual of tuna breaking the surface, bird play and water surface color/turbidity would make the schools obvious. We went from school to school picking off 3-6 at a time of the same grade of 60-80 lb YFT all day long. I managed to get 3 on the popper. It was a pleasure to catch a tuna fish on those trevalla 5'8 XXH with a stella 8000. That outfit would simply kick the shit out of theses fish in a matter of 10 minutes. A beautiful way to catch these fish.
After all was said and done we left Marias Iland at about 3:30 and returned to Punta Mita at 6 is. Final count was 24 tuna from 50-100 lb most in the 60-80 lb class. We pnly lost 2 fish all day. Both were on the popper, one spit a hook and the other popped off. 24 for 26. Simply some of the best tuna fishinhg I have ever experienced
Once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right
What a great day! Lora and Largo are just great to fish with. Congratulations.
