Last week Tred Barta fished 2 days with Bomboy in Kona while taping an episode for Tred's show. They were targeting Shortbill Spearfish (Chukars). On day one they had a Spearfish on the Big Bomb Bullet in Ice Blue. The Chukar ran some line out and came off and Bomboy told Tred's buddy to reel the lure in as fast as he could. Sure enough the Chukar came back and hit the lure right next to the boat, but then threw the hooks after a few seconds.
On day 2, Tred hooked two Mahi on his 8lb test rig and was able to bring one of them, a 25lber to the boat. The other one came unbuttoned.
The original plan was to fish 4 days, but big seas closed the harbor.
Tred wanted to run frozen ballyhoo, and Bomboy wanted to run a spread of smaller Bomboy lures to include the Big Bomb Bullet, the Baby Bullet, and his newest lure, the Mini-G.
After a battle of wills, they agreed to run Tred's stuff on one side and Bomboy's stuff on the other side.
This week Bomboy went Holoholo fishing, and was running the Mini-G on the sort corner, again looking for Chukars and Striped Marlin. He watched in amazement as an 850-lb Blue came into the spread and ate the Ice Blue Mini-G. It was on for 44 minutes, but managed to escape due to totally bent and twisted 10/0 hooks.
Bomboy, who has never, ever lacked confidence told me he was going to go out the next day and to watch out cuz the Mini-G was gonna get slammed. Next morning I get a text from Bombs saying he got a double. 438-lb Blue on the same Mini-G and a 167-lb Blue on the Big Bomb Bullet.
Tred shoulda done it the Bomboy Way!
