The fog finally lifted after a seemingly endless siege over the past 6 weeks, and the thermometer went richter as flat seas and cloudless skies drove both the ambient air temps and water conditions into the RED zone. We're back to fishing in shorts and flip flops again, thank the patron saint of sunshine and flat seas!
What more can i say about the king salmon fishing up here this year, EPIC, RICHTER, SILLY, BIBLICAL, INCREDIBLE, AWE INSPIRING, HISTORICAL, whatever adjective you want to call it - the simple fact remains that we are enjoying one of the best big salmon bites that i've ever seen.
Day in and day out it's a jaw dropper out there as 20 - 40#ers demolish anything you throw at them. I've been jigging 12 - 16" fresh pilchards from the endless bait balls on the fishing grounds and towing them around to try and weed out the smaller fish. Trolling big baits more suited to marlin and tuna fishing is a sure fire way to maximize your big fish opportunities while the getting is good, and believe you me the larger meat has been working.
Halibut fishing along the beaches continues to produce slabs in the 30 - 80# range and i'm dying to get up to my big fish honey hole again but i just can't tear myself away from this salmon bite to make the run up there.
Sigh...it's a good problem to have i guess. Too much of a good thing is the kind of conundrum i'm getting used to.
Cath and I are off to Mexico tomorrow to fire up the Maximo and chase marlin and tuna for a week. It's going to be fun, but somehow i think i'll be dreaming of Tofino until the season up here is finally done. I'm already counting down the days until i get to leave Mexico and come back up here to finish this summer off with a bang. It's almost steelhead season after all, and i can already hear my spey rod begging to be put to good use. Yup, i certainly forgot how much fun it is to be at home again.
Cath, Kalum, Adam, and I went out for a half day this morning and scored some epic fishing on Tyee's (kings over 30#'s) and halibut in shallow (90') water. Adam jumped in with his underwater camera gear and got some crazy pictures of salmon and halibut that i'll post up when he emails them. Should be pretty sweet.
Anyway, that's it for now. Time to pack and head for the airport again. Mexico, Panama, and Tofino, BC. Finally a tri-fecta worth all of the failures and bankruptcies along the way.
