As i settled into the routine of international air travel my thoughts strayed to the trip ahead and the moments of fantastic fishing we'd enjoyed over the last week...for all intents and purposes i was terribly unprepared for what awaited me in the first class cabin of Alaska air lines flight #271...
By some strange turn of fate...and perhaps for reasons we may well discover...Steve O of Jackass fame was in my seat...
As we eyed each other up i thought about not saying anything...afterall...it was a short flight...but then Steve O made the mistake of choking on his drink and i knew i had him...
"Oye cabron..." i said in my best spanish... " jew ar in my seet..."
Steve O bust out laughing...which didn't help the choking...and relenquished the window for what would turn out to be one hell of an interesting flight...
Now over the year's i've accumulated some pretty sketchy stories...but none...and i do mean NONE of them can touch what that deliquent madman had to say over the next three hours...
When Bogii rolled up to the curb at LA international to pick me up he offered to duct tape Steve O to the trunk in lieu of his other ride home...which i thought was a nice gesture...but Steve O declined and as we said our goodbyes and roared off in Bogii's cherry red speednugget i couldn't help but wonder just what kind of madness lay ahead...
From Steve O to Calico's...that's what the next 24 hrs had instore...and as sunny southern california weather contributed to the mood Bogii and i loaded up Tiger Lilly II and hit the boat launch for an afternoon of inshore R&R...
As we bounced from beer store to tackle shop to boat launch i called Bob Hoose at Berkley to pick his brain about what i needed as far as baits or lures...
Bob said "GULP! 3" shrimp in New Penny and Nuclear Chicken...fished on a 3/8 oz jig head with mucho rythmo"...aye aye Bob thanks for that...
Bogii and i headed out to a series of rockpiles he had marked and no chit second cast i had my first calico bass on 8lb and a 3" nuclear chicken...now try explaining that one to the kids...
The fish hit hard and fought well on the ultralight gear...i was stoked and complimented the skipper on a damn fine job...
Throughout the afternoon i plucked away at them...calico's, halibut, sand bass, vermillion's...the nuclear chicken and the new penny were on fire...and as much as he tried Bogii couldn't touch a fish with live sardines and slider rigs...although he did have a good bite at one point...but he missed it...
So it is the way of captains from time to time...when you're more worried about putting your passengers on fish than actually fishing yourselves...and although i did skunk Bogii's ass yesterday he sure did a fine job of putting me in the right spots...and thank you buddy...cause i thouroughly enjoyed catching those fish...
