Well another trip for the record books this weekend with perfect weather , perfect fishing and time on the water.
We took off friday night after loading the boat for what seemed hours. Cleared the pass at 10:30 pm headed SSE for 28 miles to a spot i like to fish at night. Dropped the hook and shut down at 11:40 or so , got the stereo going, turned on the underwater lights and started chumming. With in minutes we have just about every type of bait on could want under the boat and huge snappers swimming under the stern. We started fishing for the huge mangrove snappers under the boat and began catching one after another all over 8 pounds and some busting the 12 pound mark. Some where along the way , my buddy John hangs what he thought was a shark , turns out its a just legal cobia !
We started catching huge amberjacks just under the boat in the lights free lining chunks of menhaden in the 25 to 45 pound range. Then comes the kingfish on the chunk , then scamp, then more AJ's , and finally more monster snappers. I tried a butterfly jig and first drop , 8 huge cobia follow it up for the bottom right under the boat in the lights. I twitched the jig just right and BAM nice cobia on. Then the fish come right up and green and we gaff it first shot into the boat............which made a nice mess, but we had a nice 40 pound cobia in the box. Then my buddy Reggie catches a flying fish in the lights , tosses it out free line and within 5 minutes hooks a huge 30 pound plus blackfin tuna which made its way into the box.
Before we knew it , the sun started showing grey light, and we had fished all night long with some serious carnage for 4 angler with limits of big jacks , kings, Mangrove snappers, 2 cobia, and nice tuna.As the sun started up , the whole ridge erupted with kings and blackfin tuna everywhere. We all cast out different poppers and or jigs and everyone is hammered on big fish. We fought then for 30 minutes or so before i lost mine, then johns comes of .....and finally we loose the other two , WHAT THE HELL .........Have no idea what they where , but they kicked our ass and all of them got away after almost and hours of battles for nothing? ( I think we may have hooked some yellowfin tuna ? or maybe some very large Blackfin)
We packed up at 6:30 am and head south to an area the roff report suggested there may be a weed line. We get the spread out and reggie stays up while everyone else falls a sleep. We trolled for a few hours with no love , and then made it to the zone. We notice two large sport fishers a mile of so off headed our way , so we head that way and pass them seeing the weed line they must have been on. We find a nice break with a weed line really forming up get the baits out and within minutes we are hooked up with a nice dolphin. As we really that one in , the whole school comes up and we have dolphin fish every where. We start catching them on popper, jigs, bait and make a nice big mess of the boat again.......dolphin can sure bleed. We continue on down the weed line and stop to catch some baits and again the dolphin find us and again we boat a few more nice ones.
We continued down the weed line working one side twice , then popped over to the other side because the line looked cleaner. Not long into the troll we hook a big dolphin and i was next to the reel so i caught ! keep trolling along and we hook another big dolphin , but this one escapes right at gaff with a last second jump and shake. Keep trolling along and keep catching dolphin and finally decide we have had enough dolphin and decide to troll south. We do not get far when we hook something bigger and again I am the only one on deck with reggie in the tower. I get the rod and i am thinking its a white marlin or sail as it came up and tagged two baits on the port side finally getting stuck on the trusty Black Bart rum cay candy on the long rigger. The fish starts off deep and them come right up like its going to jump but never does. The fish felt pretty heavy and i was sure it was a marlin but it would never jump. The fish came up the port side to where i could see lure riding high in the water, and then it just comes off so i have no idea what the heck it was.
We keep heading south and find nothing really good so we work back toward the weeds and along the way we find a nice patch we pull up on and a big bull comes out to play. I tossed the fish a live bait which the fish inhales GAME on ! i was using spin gear and this fish put on a nice show jumping all over all the way to the gaff and in the box. We decide to move to do some deep dropping and give up on the dolphin as we had a box full. We get set up and get on the spot and my first drop i yank up a huge yellowedge grouper !!!! we keep trying to get back on the fish but really do not do much except for a few cusk eels . By now its pretty late in the day and the decision was made to roll in 30 miles to 265 ft of water and try for grouper and scamp. We started off slow but within 20 minutes or so and start putting scamp in the boat pretty steady as the day began to end along with a nice tile fish. To add to the mix we also hung some huge amberjacks that we released and by now we are just totally spent, out of ice and no more cooler space. We start to pack up and put stuff away as the sun finally begins to set when the whole area blows up with tuna and some nice dolphin fish busting and jumping everywhere, then several huge sharks begin circling the boat in the lights which was really cool to watch. I tried my best to cast poppers at the fish and did get a few blow ups and all misses, but we couldnt have fit another fish in the boat anyway.
Drove home from 50 miles out at 9 pm and got back to the dock at midnight with a very loaded down boat full of fish.
