PELAGIC PIRATE : Cobia report for May 5-7

Decided to hit the road quickly for a un-planned trip to fish before the oil spill hits our area .

Left late tuesday night and got to the beach at midnight, moving the boat under the bridge at low tide at 1 am , then to bed.

First morning we broke the jetties at 8 am , and were in the fishing zone to teh west at 8:30. Didnt see and or catch the first fish till noon , but it was a nice 55 pound cobia for a friend of mine named matt.

i was up next and spotted a nice one and hooked up 30 minutes after matt's fish. Again , we land another sweet 50 pounder. So
now its like 2 pm and we have two in the box looking for our last fish for my other buddy mark. We quickly spot and hook
another one for mark , but decide its so early and going so good
, we let the fish in the 30 pound range go.

Went the rest of the day botching all other chances and ended 3-6 for the day. The water color was the biggest issue as the heavy rains we had , made the fresh water lakes dump into teh gulf and muddy things up.

Day two we went west again , and put the first fish in the boat around 2 pm , which was a nice 45 pound fish. We ended up going 1-3 that day in what was a long slow day in really nice conditions besides the water.

Day 3: we went east this time to escape the dirty water. We drove early into the sun all the way to crooked Island sound where we found crystal clear waters. Spot the first fish at 9 am and its a bruiser. I went to cast and my dang eel got tangled around the tower , then the fish came right to the boat where he hear the blaring stero down below and spooked off quick. This sums up the entire day of spotting fish and bocthing every attempt in some form or fashion. At one point we spotted a group of 7 very large cobia that all swam right up to the boat and would not eat anything we had .

We ended up catching two monster Jack Cravelle in 5 ft of surf on jigs , one shark and saw thousands of Tarpon migrating down the that would eat either. Despite our best efforst we ended up 0-12 that day which is just plain "Wrong"...... But i really cant complain as the boat has seen over 60 cobia this season alone and caught 30 of them ........50% aint that bad of a catch ratio when your talking cobia

    Enjoy the photos.
