Below is a 2 day report from my boat partner who was able to fish friday and saturday out of Panama City on our boat the "PELAGIC PIRATE".
With all the new tower work just completed in pensacola hopes were high that Reggie and crew would put the first Cobia into the new boat as i had failed to hook one the previous weekend on the way home.
Day One:
Got on the water late and spotted a bruiser cobia about an hour into our fishing. Easily 70#, swimming slow and lazy. Worked the fish for about 30 minutes, but it just wouldn’t eat. Threw the eel first – it barely looked at it. Threw it again, but the fish just wasn’t interested. Threw two difference cobia jigs and the fish followed lazily for a minute, but just would not commit. By the time we were ready to throw a different bait, the fish disappeared.
Saw two really small fish later in the day, but not worth throwing to. My buddy Mark gets stung by a bee in the tower, so that makes for a good laugh. Saw our 4th fish late in the day, popped up right in front of us looking at us in the tower and spooked down from there. Just wasn’t our day – 0 for 4 if you count the two little dink fish. Backed the boat into Hook’s on the Bay after dark for dinner and called it a day.
Day 2:
We headed out real early, but the clouds were putting a damper on the cobia hunt. Looked for about an hour and then saw some fish busting in the distance. Headed over to see what was up and saw a huge school of thousands of Redfish boiling on the surface. Threw to the fish and we were on with a triple hookup – three guys in the tower with fish on. Lines crossed, one fish went under the boat, but we opened the bail on one rod and managed to maneuver the boat away from the fish. Got everybody out of the tower and boated all three redfish. Too big to take home (40 inches), but made for some good fun while the clouds messed up our cobia fishing.
Continued on fishing until 2:00 and decided to take the boys out offshore to salvage some dinner. Weather wasn’t looking promising for cobras, so caught some grouper and big triggers, got broken off by a big grouper and then headed in.
Not the Cobia success we were looking for this weekend, but we made the best of it. Still getting to know the boat and our brand new tower set up. That alone was worth the trip.
Keep posted as we are at it again starting friday for 3 days![]()
