Posting for Captain Rimmer Covington today. Capt. Rimmer fished last week with the Allen Comer group. The weather never gave them a good window to make the long run to the floaters for the yellow fin but they were very pleased with the awesome bottom fishing action they were able to get on. They worked areas in the 750’ range with deep dropping gear, some of which they had brought themselves (Bob’s Crane) fishing for yellow edge and snowy grouper. A couple of hours into it they were able to finish off the deep dropping with a 3 man limit of beautiful grouper in the 5-15# range. They then set their sights on the Wahoo. Capt. Rimmer aimed the boat for some nearby rigs that have been producing Wahoo and were able to come up with one 50# and a couple of missed strikes. After the Wahoo bite had shut off the boys started making their way back in but stopped at one last spot to top the box off with a limit of 40# amberjacks. Allen and the guys were great anglers and a pleasure to have on the lodge.
Earlier this week Capt. Rimmer was back out with the Greg Blue group. Capt. Rimmer and the guys made the long run to the west for Wahoo but came up with no luck on the hooters. Worked at it for a while trying different techniques and managed to boat ten nice blackfin tuna in the 20# range and a 40# yellow fin. Stopped on the way home to drop down for a few amber jack and it didn’t take them long to fill their 5 man limit of AJ’s in the 40# range. Even after making the run for the Wahoo and striking out these guys worked hard and still managed to scratch out a great box of fish. With the weather starting to improve and becoming more predictable as the spring season nears the fishing should just start getting better and better.
