    ? on Mazatlan swords.

Only fished out of Mazatlan once a few years back. Cheap panga with kids for captains. All they had were some small feathered trolling lures, no live well, no casting tackle... nothing. But since we were going after yellowfin.. it was not a problem. Caught footballs all day.

However, we did come across some basking swords. With nothing to pitch to them.. I was more than a little frustrated at watching the kids trying to get them to go after our trolled offering with no avail.

(no, they were not tailing striped marlin)

    anyway.. my question:
How good, reliable, utilized is the early year sword fishing out of Mazatlan? Not an important question; I just happened to be thinking about swordfish today for some reason. Would the daytime sword tactics of Florida be useful out of Mazatlan?

    sorry... just bored.

Mazatlan has a somewhat established fishery for swords, particularly in the late winter and early spring months. Very few charter boats target swords with any degree of success however, but every year some lucky sailfish anglers pull off the right spot at the right time luck and gets the odd one or two.

I've seen them in PV, but only hooked one pup over the years, and i spend a LOT of time in the binos down there every winter. As far as i'm concerned that area is not as dependable as say either Cabo or up the baja but there are a few around for sure. I don't think anyone has ever tried deep dropping around here, but i'm just not sure if there's enough of a population to make it worthwhile.
