Vandenberg - KEY News has confirmed the identify of a student who was attacked and killed by a shark this morning at a beach near Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Officials say 19 year old Lucas McKaine Ranson, of Romoland, died after a shark pulled him off his "boogie board" about 100 yards from shore.

An eyewitness at the scene called the KEY newsroom around 9:20 a.m. saying the victim "had his leg bitten off and lost too much blood." That source also told KEY News the victim was pulled to shore by a friend, but efforts to stop the bleeding were unsuccessful.

Officials at Vandenberg have closed Surf, Wall, and Minuteman beaches as a result. The beaches will be closed for a 72 hour period.
A portion of Surf Beach is accessible to the public.

The last known attack at Surf Beach took place back in September of 2008. A surfer reported having his board bitten by a shark. A fatal shark attack occurred at Avila Beach in 2003 killing Nipomo resident Dorborah Franzman. Officials confirm that attack was by a Great White shark.

One resident who spoke to KEY News at the beach this morning said he has never spotted a shark in the waters off Surf Beach, but reminded ocean lovers "it is the shark's territory, after all."

    shark attack

Josh: Sometime ago I surfed at Ano Nuevo State Park (South side) which is not that far away and can honestly say I wanted to keep my feet on my (short) board. I was alone, and pieces of bull kelp would slide along my legs in the boils - creepy. Anyhow, when I came in I was speaking to an abalone diver who said that the prior week a carcass of a great white had come to shore pretty well chewed up by another shark! That water is definitely the "sharkiest" water I've ever surfed in!

I hear ya! Earlier this spring we spent a few days at the Hollister Ranch with the Malloy bros, and our friend, who lives at the Ranch, pointed up the beach and says - "Keep your eyes open if you paddle out up there, there's a local Porker we see every now and then!"

I stayed real close to the boys during that session, fully aware that i was the worst paddler out there, and the old joke that you don't have to out swim the shark, just the other surfers! Not that there was much chance I would have been able to do that. Sharky waters for sure.

    Be careful out there boys!

This story gave me the chills....

FATAL – 22 October 2010 – Surf Beach, Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, US – body boarder attacked

The barrels were red with blood

Lucas McKaine Ransom, 19, died after having his leg bitten off by a shark while he was body boarding with a friend about 100 metres offshore of Surf Beach on the property of Vandenberg Air Force Base about 130 miles (about 210 km) northwest of Los Angeles, California.

The shark, believed to be great white and reported to be between 14 and 20 feet long, attacked without warning and pulled Ransom under the water. His friend and other witnesses pulled him from the water. He was pronounced dead at the scene by officials at the Air Force base.

His friend, Matthew Garcia, was quoted in various media as saying he was 2 feet away when the shark breached the water on its side and attacked without warning.

“There was no sign, there was nothing. It was all very fast, very stealth.”

He said the shark appeared to be about 18 feet long.

“We were just in perfect water. The waves were perfect, great barrels. You hear a surfer say, ‘Oh, perfect waves’ — well, the waves do not get any better than they were today.”

“When the shark hit him, he just said, ‘Help me, dude!’ He knew what was going on. It was really fast. You just saw a red wave and this water is blue — as blue as it could ever be — and it was just red, the whole wave. Even the barrel was red.”

He said, as waves (reportedly 6-8 foot surf that day) broke over his head, he tried to find his friend who had been dragged underwater. He turned towards shore to go get help and then saw his red body board pop up. He swam to his friend and did chest compressions as he brought him to shore.

“He was just floating in the water. I flipped him over on his back and underhooked his arms. I was pressing on his chest and doing rescue breathing in the water.

“He was just kind of lifeless, just dead weight.”
