    Costa Rica Tarpon Info Needed!

Boys i need some help from the coconut telegraph, my uncle Keith recently moved to the east coast of Costa Rica, Grecia district, and is direly in need of some tarpon action. Anyone know of a reputable guide in that area or some info i can pass along to him????

Thanks in advance for any help!

Probably the closest operation to him is going to be the Rio Colorado Lodge, and that still looks like a pretty sporty drive.

I've never fished the east coast but my friends rave about the huge tarpon and snook over there, mostly pretty far south from him though, around Limon and the Rio Banano. Sorry I couldn't help with anything closer but he's pretty far from the coast and I don't know of any guides or operations up the rivers there.

    CR tarpon

My wife and I fished from the Rio Colorado lodge in 2005. We have been happy in remote camps at other places but RC was just nasty. It must have been an amazing place when it was being maintained, but that's been years if not decades ago.

The Silver King Lodge is next door, literally across the fence. I have heard better reports from there.

They both fish the same waters and share a common pool of local guides. It's the management that makes the difference.

We were there in December and did pretty well. I can't remember the exact numbers, but there were lots of tarpon off the beach (can get rough), a few in the river mouth. We did not find the snook that were supposed to be there, or any tarpon upriver.

If you're on a budget and like an adventure you can do what I did 3 years ago and just show up in Barra del Colorado with your own gear, rent a shitty little room at Memo's place, and go to the bars (other side of river is better, plus you'll get cred for going over there as no gringos ever go over there I was told) and start talking about fishing. If you're good at saying "pura vida", making friends, and buy the first round you'll have all the trips you want lined up with off duty captains from the lodges for the price of gas for their skiff and beer.

Going out that nasty river mouth in a 16 foot john boat to jump 200 lb. tarpon was absolutely incredible. I highly recommend it.
