It seems to me that there is a tremendous lack of foresight in the decision making process (though as a Canadian citizen living between Mexico and Canada i am hesitant about pointing fingers at how the USA is running their country. I will, however, vehemently support efforts pertinent to American's rights to fish as the effects of legislature such as is proposed would have devastating effects world-wide).
I am just now learning of an entirely new set of circumstances that are cause for alarm with regards to our fishery in Canada, and they are very similar to what Americans are facing as well.
It makes me wonder why lobbyists such as environmental groups garner so much favor in the ears of political powers, and then i remember that they aren't using bullhorns or picket signs at public rallies to elicit such profound effect. They are using check books in closed door meetings which, in terms of political power and influence, is what ultimately matters. And that, my friends, is the cold hard truth about back room politics whether you come from Canada or Cuba or the good old USA.
While i am of the belief that public opinion CAN change the direction of legislature, i am far to well read to fool myself into believing that this kind of back room politics is going to be derailed by public outcry. Greed and power are the gods we champion in government, and if you want to truly succeed in winning, then you are going to need to beat them at their own game.
We can write letters until we turn blue and stomp up and down in front of government buildings with picket signs and war cries, but sadly it will not make a difference in the long run. History of government has proven that if you truly wish to succeed in initiating change, then you must purchase said change and put people in charge who will listen. Or break out the artillery and take the old guard down - though believe it or not you can go to jail for even suggesting that these days. You are talking about a government that approved the Patriot Act and literally stripped away basic human rights across North America!!!
Look at what the food industry accomplished with the FDA. How did five major food producers succeed in completely re-writing federal law to ensure they maintain a monopoly on feeding Americans? How did Monsanto patent the soy bean and make it illegal for farmers to grow and produce it without their explicit consent? Don't even get me started on the oil industry. The simple point is this - GOVERNMENT CHANGE IS NOT ACCOMPLISHED BY WRITING LETTERS OR RALLIES. Change happens by force or by money and thousands of years of human history proves this time and time again.
If you really want to open Pandora's box, then be prepared for the disgusting ugly truth that lies within it. If you want to make sure that you can still go fishing in US waters one day, then i'd suggest setting up a trust and start purchasing political favor. If we continue to fool ourselves into thinking that public opinion is going to be the catalyst of change we are only giving the opposition more time to fundraise and lobby government for personal interests.
If every one of our members donated $100 US to this trust we'd have $5,000,000 in one week. If we donated $100 a month for one year i guarantee you that by the end of the next election you are going to have more fishing options than you could possibly know what to do with. I don't mean to be a joykill, but $50,000,000 US goes a lot further in Washington than 50,000 teary-eyed bleeding heart letters.
That is the cold hard truth of world-wide politics.
Now i've got my $100 Mary, John, Jer - where do i send it?
