    Borneo Style

Guy's and you thought you had it all.
This is desperado on a level that’s unimaginable.
We don’t have much and finding a proper boat here is by no means a easy task. Taxes and red tape.
So we do with what we have and adapted it.

This 16’8 Ski Boat was converted to become the talk of the town. Driven by a 85hp fitted with state of the art alu out riggers supported by the custom hand made Top and 5 x 50 lb gear. Auto pilot is a string attached from the T-Top. We have enough lures and courage to take up any fishing war. Havend had a Marlin yet but we are working to it.

Not sure what is gonna happen the day that we do get a marlin but time will tel. Most of these Guy’s here in Borneo have never seen a big fish. The photo below was taken during a day out. The first time this woman goes fishing for game fish( Bosses wife) and sees the fish that she is hauling here eye’s almost pop out.

This is what I live for, is moments like that.

Great photos.....it's all in your heart...and soul. The bottom photo says so many things and depicts the anticipation all fishermen and fisherwomen feel when the mystery from below finally surfaces.

Thanks for the report and photos. You're going to have a lot of fun. Keep us posted and don't let any marlin jump in the boat.

Look out for improvised FADs that the local fishermen may be setting out for tenggiri (Spanish mackerel). This will most likely be in shallower water of 100 metres and less. In peninsular Malaysia the local name for a FAD is unjam but they may be called something different in your area. They may be as simple as some coconut leaves tied to floats, but they attract baitfish and other gamefish including billfish. My first ever marlin was hooked up near one of those things. Birds working around the FAD, first drop with a bait rig produced a full house of livebait and five minutes after drifting one out the little black was hooked and jumping. As I recall there were fourteen jumps in the first ten minutes.

Other game fish you might find around the FADs include the aforementioned Spanish mackerel, dorado and cobia.

I'd also look for bonito schools under working birds and, if you have a sounder, for schools of bait.

I checked out where you are. Holy s... I thought you were on the west coast. The east coast has much deeper water much closer to shore. If the chart I am looking at is accurate there should be some dropoffs east and south of Karang Sangata that ought to be worth a shot.

    Fisherman,
Thanks Guy’s, yea won’t be loading no marlin in that tub. No space I guess. Just hoping one does not decide to get in on it’s own. I do have a nice talk with the crew before every trip and run trough the action plan. But with fish you never know.

It is n bit of a tricky set up and a bit crowded but there are so many guy’s here that wanna go out that I have limited it to 3 on the boat. My plan is to put some lucky guy on to a marlin or a couple would be even better. I’ve had the honor so it’s for them to try it out.
Live bait or fresh bait is a bit of a problem so we drag Kona’s and some day’s Deep diving plastics. Some day’s I run birds in front of the kona’s but no luck yet. I’ve had a couple of Sailys on bait but that’s it.

Water is very warm here( 28 C) so not to sure how to work it, greenish color to it but there is no lack of depth. Man this place gets deep quickly. 6mile there is a drop from 80m to 250m and further 3mile down to 750 another 2 mile 1000 and then it goes steadily to 2500m.

Maybe you guy’s could give us some pointers on what to try next or how to work it.

Keep pounding those dropoffs and you probably will get a marlin bite sooner or later. Sometimes it just takes time. The greenish water may be a seasonal thing but it isn't as big an issue for black marlin. The last one I hooked (in Phuket) was in horrible green water and that was a solid fish of 400 plus. Speaking of which, 50s may be a little sporty for your side. 50 is almost too heavy for the little nippers that you find in the gulf of Thailand and in the Tioman/Dayang/Aur area but I'd be real surprised if there wasn't the possibility for some bigger fish in your area.

The best option for getting live bait may be to troll very small lures to pick up bonitos and other small bait sized tunas. Are you seeing anything like that around?

    Fisherman,
Thanks I will give it some more time. Fad's are plenty full so are the boats in this area. lots of floating stuff, logs, palm branches some days a hole palm Bush. I've tried working these on several day’s, no luck yet.

My new plan of attack this coming weekend is Bait. I'm gonna get some bait from the local market and drag those, hoping the barracudas don't come on them. Will see.

We have a place 30miles out that has very good potential sitting in 1500m and rising to 150m but running there on one motor in a 16" boat is a heck of a risk. Been there on 2 occasions for about an hour and had to head back with storms giving us a hard time, man I'll tell you this.

It aint fun in that boat with the storms we get over here, winds get to around 20knt and it pores down like God has opened a fire hose on you. Fortunately the storms don’t stay long but they sure do bugger up the ocean good enough to get worried.

I’ve spooled new line on to the reels
