Just got done fishing the 4 Day Bermagui Blue Water Classic tournament. Down here in beautiful Bermagui a small fishing town about 350 miles south of Sydney know for its monster striped marlin. The first 3 days of the tournament did not go our way we saw 12 marlin not including the other 20 or so free jumpers that we saw. We ended up getting bites out of 3 and did not come tight on any of them. On day 4 with 2 hours to go in the tournament we found a massive bait ball with 3 lit up striped marlin circling it. I quickly grabbed the 30 pound outfit which was already connected to a lively mackerel and handed it to our junior angler little Tommy. I stripped out about 30 foot of line on to the deck as captain Ian pulled up to the bait ball. He slid the port side of the boat perfectly up to the bait ball and I chucked the squirming mackerel right into the middle of the ball. As soon as the bait hit the water I knew it was going to get bit. Sure as sh*t the medium sized fish of the three that were on the baitball turned and sucked the bait down like a Vallarta hooker on Bogeys bannana. Our angler Tom fed the fish perfectly, he pushed the lever drag up to 10 pounds of pressure and we were on. We ended up fighting the fish for 40 minutes on 30 pound. It went 85.2 kilograms or 187 pounds. The tournament is set up in a way that rewards more points for lower line classes. We ended up winning the biggest captured marlin award in the junior division. The boat with the most tags ended up tagging 9 for 4 days and the biggest weighed marlin went 110 kilos. All in all it was a good tournament. I am still feeling the aftermath of a huge night in Bermi last night.
