Ambush Homecoming - TX Daytime Sword

This is our report from our transport trip of our new boat....Ambush. We've been looking for a long time and finally.....she found us. A new level of insanity and opportunity lies ahead. www.texas-offshore.com

The world is a great place to be these days if you are one of the Cajuns or Mexican’s that comprises the crew of AMBUSH. We flew down to Rockport on Thursday night to go pick up our new boat. After a night and a day of great hospitality from the previous crew and owners we set course with our new partner in crime Scott D. at the helm. It was a beautiful cruise out of Aransas and we set our spaceship on course for some uncharted (to us) swordfishing grounds.

We arrived around 9pm and we were all ready but still in total shock at the new level of fishing we had arrived at. After 20 minutes we were hooked up. Jason is on the Beast and is fighting what seems to be a formidable 4 swordfish loosing streak. After about an hour we bring his first sword into the boat and the first fish on our new boat Ambush and Scott’s first swordfish at the helm. Just a little note, we did not christen the boat as many do on purpose. We decided that the boat did not deserve this until we had a billfish under our belt. We had swordfish free swimming around the boat and we were FEEDING them baits! Jason’s fish was hooked 10 feet from the stern...A lot was becoming clear in those moments....After a great deal of celebrating the bloody christening the weather got terrible. We were in 6-8’s the rest of the night and then 8-10’s all morning. We made a few calls and were assured that the weather was going to die so we all got some much needed rest. After a day spent cooking, watching TV, and trolling in seas that would normally have sent us home the wind died EXACTLY when ReefCast assured us it would 2 days prior.

We set course for another spot that we had never tried to give this daytime thing a shot. We put up our riggers and as we did our flying gaff fell in the water!! We knew we were in for something special when that happened. Francisco started to build his famous leaders and we figured out a way to skip the sled crap and send our Baitmasters bait down to the bottom. Anthony was on the Beast when we did the drop and not 10 minutes after bottom contact he was hooked up. For about an hour the fish was very docile and deep then it was like a switch flipped and she stormed for the surface. The first thing we saw was her rostrum breach and we knew we were once again tangling with destiny. She put her head above water a couple of times and then went back down. About 1.5 hours into the fight Anthony was more jacked than ever and Francisco and I were building a harpoon out of Duct Tape, a boat hook, and an iron. About 2 hours into the fight we all witnessed one of the most amazing billfish jumps of our lives. This big girl cleared the water by 2 feet, and I am not one to speculate but we were starting to think the homemade harpoon was no longer an option. Long story short 2 hours and 40 minutes (from what I can tell from the video) I grabbed the leader on one of the largest swordfish I have ever seen. I had it in my hand for 2 or 3 seconds and had to let go because she charged erratically straight under the boat. Scott did a fantastic job of maneuvering and we thought we were ok but 5 minutes later -on what was one of the hardest runs I have ever seen in the Gulf of Mexico the line parted and it was game over. Seems that she rubbed the bottom of the boat. Anthony was such a trooper, we were all devastated at first and he walked inside. Then about 5 minutes later I heard him quietly telling Scott that he was going back out because fishing is what you make it and we have to keep going. What a pimp. Thinking back on this fish, this experience with my family and best friends, I cannot help but be content about that fish swimming away. I have been part of what is the current Texas state record and would have loved to have possibly done it again (especially during the day), but we are all so blessed to play this game that often times we forget the significance of just playing and the true triviality of winning. That night Anthony had redemption and landed a fish that was over 100lbs but not 60” (our tournament minimum) and a giant squid that was squirting water at us and inking the hell out of the boat. After Fran’s famous fajitas Scott pointed our new sled for Freeport and we cruised in at 30 knots blaring rock and roll and eating breakfast for some and deep sleep for others.

I personally want everyone to know that life is what you make it. Our group of friends by all of societies standards is not supposed to be doing what we are doing but through hard work and pure love for the sport we have found a way to play at a very high level at a very young age and we are all thankful for that. I also want to welcome Scott to the Ambush family. He is a great guy no matter what he tells you and a true pleasure to fish with. Enough with the sappy stuff, AMBUSH is in Freeport now and everyone please, DON’T GET NERVOUS!!

Classic guys. Those were some pretty sweet gaff shots, and that fish you lost certainly showed nice at color.

Thank god those were following seas!
