One of my OX-66 150's overheated ( alarm, rpm cutback). After letting things cool, I restarted. Water pump seems fine, ran it hard for 10-15 min and no problems. Any ideas other than trash clogging the intake temporarily?-- any by passes or what not on this unit
It sounds like either your oil or the water chambers need fixing/cleaning....
I've got a 150 yamie on my small boat.....Same exact thing was happening to me......Come to find out that the water chambers behind the spark plugs were slightly clogged with salt and grundge....I guess not enough water was getting through the chambers to cool down the one side of the motor......My buddy cleaned them out and I haven't had a problem since.....
Put new impellers in when I bought the boat last year--- pee hole and exhaust water flow seems fine. Don't know about the thermostats-- likely original. Do these units have 2 thermostats per engine? (boat is in Hi and I'm in Va.)
Glenn, maybe it is something like what i copied below. this is what was wrong with my buddies yami. sometimes it would overheat also and this is what they found wrong.
The tapping and overheating was from a clogged (with carbon) oxygen sensor tube in #1 cylinder. The tube adjusts the fuel injection intake, when it is clogged it just sits there and moves around causing tapping sound inside the block, that is why it sounded like something else, whew !!
Maybe get this checked out to see if it could be your problem also. fairly simple to fix from wha ti gather.
the engine gave the over heat alarm, right??? after you let it cool down, you ran it hard and no problem, right???
a few dumb questions....
1st....what engine speed did the alarm go off on???
2nd...last time water pumps were replaced,as well as thermostats???
