Yamaha 225hp 4 stroke rpm problem Lucas Gas Treatment

Ok, I'm having problems at around 3800 rpms on the starboard engine. She wants to bog down and when I pull the throttle back, it's fine. I was told possibly injectors need to be pulled and cleaned by one person. Another told me to pull the spark plugs and either replace or clean and put back in.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Also does anyone use Lucas fuel treatment in their outboards? I use in my automobiles and was wondering if this would help clean my injectors also?

    Muchas Gracias!

Just had the same problem on our 02 fourstrokes. Starboard started acting up a couple weeks ago. We pulled the plugs and replaced them and then started looking at injectors on both motors. Yanked and cleaned them on both port and starboard and she runs like a champ now.

As for the lucas I have no clue. I use it on the road but never on the boat. Ill let that for someone else to recommend what you should use.

Could be a filter issue, too.

    Fisherman,
Watch out for additives in oil and fuel man. There is no mechanic in a bottle. If these additive where so great all the oil company’s would own them. All I'm saying is if the is a problem Start eliminating the possible causes.

Is your Taco meter jumping when she's bogging ?
    1. If not check your fuel supply to the motor. Quantity & pressure. You would need a manual or advise on the pressure level.
    2. If so you could have some electrical issue's. Sparkplugs, Timing, Airflow meter. Exhaust sensor, fuel pressure monitor, RPM limiter, doggy connection. Man there are heaps of control devices on the 4 stroke. It mite be advisable to get a manual and work with that.

I’ve had sensor, airflow meters and fuel pumps buggering me around with similar issues.

    Good luck.

stop running the motor number 1!!!

this is a normal thing anymore since no one stands up to the friggin ethanol stuff!

Here is what you are going to do.. either take it to your mechanic and clean out the vst tank and replace the main filter, the little horseshoe filter that goes from the high n low pumps (bet you cannot even blow through it!) and the screen at the base of your low pump inside your vst tank also needs replaced or cleaned.
thank your local corn farmer and politician for the service. if you get good at the service it usually takes 1 hour to do the stuff yourself and 75 bucks in filters... mechanic runs 450... plus filters... this needs to be done about every 300 hrs now in 2009.. and up through till we see no more ethanol. it has not got to your injectors yet and you better pray your not pushing the particals through by running the motor more without doing this.

by the way this is not a warrantee issue this is 'real life you pay here stuff'.. sucks but it will fix your boggin' down engine.. if you have two or three engines ..do them all!

I HATE the smell of gas!

After u have done the filter service and u still have the problem,it is your injectors. They can be cleaned by pushing fuel through them in the opposite direction.Hook a fuel line to the output side of the injector and fire it with jumper wires.just tap the contacts dont give it constant power. If you get some black particles out of them your fuel pump is shot.If you had water in your fuel once it goes through the pump it starts to come apart and will go right to your injectors.the high pressure pump is lubricated by fuel, water does'nt lubricate to well.

You better hope additives help! Because the gasoline and low sulfur diesel is not the same as when that remark was coined!

Thanks to all so far and here's the update....I replaced the inline filters....then new plugs....then new fuel filter in Starboard engine.....I'm waiting for the "horseshoe" shaped filter (also recommended from my mechanic)....and we are going to replace the vst filter as well.

Since just doing the fuel filter and inline, i was able to get up to 4800 rpms before it would bog down again. My mechanic def. thinks that with the other fuel filter replaced and the vst filter I should be good to go.

I do need to learn how to replace alot of these filters myself to keep the labor cost down, though so I may invest in a Manual.
Thanks again to all and I will only use Star Tron additive from now on, nothing else.

Starboard engine good as new...but Port??

Ok we replaced all filters on engine, including the inline, fuel filters, vst and the motor was like new again.
Went fishing yesterday after some test runs the day before and then about 20 miles out, the port engine starts jumping from 4600-4800then back down to 4200 and it does the same just jumping 2000rpm's up and down. we pump the ball tight and it seemed to help a little but I couldn't push the throttle above 4200 rpm's.
Then we start our troll after and additional hr of running due to engine trouble....and the motor was fine the rest of the day.

    What gives?

did you clean out the vst tank???

your engine has a high and low fuel pump system. the little screen / filter will collect small stuff on it and will bog down time after time till you clean that out of there. the sad part of it is that this is the first step to do and without taking care of it your just going to load up your filter again and if it gets to your injectors your going to be bummin' big time with the $ it costs to clean those! my next door neighbor had to replace the fuel lines in his 02' cat the other day they had collaped from the inside out.... and they want to add more ethanol to the fuel.. oh where will it end...???!!! I have two of the u - shaped filters on my work table right now .. neither one looks dirty but damn if you can blow air through them... boat $45k..., beer, ice n rum 25 bucks.., your girls new swimsuit $50.00 ...., 1 gallon of bs fuel that makes you cuss and worry about the boat more than your girl looking great and being out on the boat with you... priceless!
