Wood boat question (Carolina)
We are working on a plank Juniper boat, completly sanded off the old paint and epoxy that sits below the water line and removed the lifting strakes. The next task is to rebuild the strakes and that is my question for you guys. The old ones were Juniper and we don't have a problem using that again, but is there an alternative ?
We are also still exploring options for a new bottom coating. We are thinking about an epoxy coat with an enamel or poly paint covering. Anyone with recent experience with the new paints ?

wooden boat question
after building wood boats for years ,repairing them and repairs on the OTHER material (f.g.) i think in replacing lifting strakes i'd use mahogany laminate strips and then shape ,fair and glass them with epoxy.I'm not the guru, it's just that it has worked for me in the past and kind of what i stick to
I have used juniper in the past and it's great to work with but on a hull bottom i think its a little on the soft side even though its glassed, mahogany if the right board is chosen machines and shapes well , accepts epoxy well and glasses well.
As far as bottom coating ,in my experience , i've always used either west system barrier coat or on my cold molded hulls that are glassed with epoxy i use Interprotect 2000 ,2 coats then bottom paint.
Again not that i am an expert, it's what i've done with some sucess

If juniper is whats there then why switch?
Juniper is light and pourus so the resin will bond better then mahogany. I have heard of juniper hulls lasting 40 50 years. I have seen some Rybovich mahogany hulls that practically needed the whole bottom replanked. Thats a no brainer to me.

Th hull is a 30 year old Harkers Island built boat and was still on the original coating on the bottom. We found no rotting or soft spots at all other than a spot where we had some storm damage a few years ago and never resealed it well enough, but that spot is minimal. The strakes were in perfect shape also but unusable after removal.
With using Mahogany and making curves, what size strips are you able to use ?

Anthony's Ark is a blowboater
No, expert here. But, if you go with Mahogany it will expand and contract at a different rate than the Juniper and lead to cracking overtime. Then water entry, even if it is epoxed. Use Juniper on Juniper and Mahogany on Mahogany.
