My motor being a '74, I run straight Heavy Duty 40W in mine in the dead of summer.
Very early season, I run 20W50 then go to straight 30W or 40W, depending how the weather goes (very volatile up here LOL, sometimes it gets hot early).
I winterize with fresh 20W50, so always use that a bit in the Spring.
But most of the season it's straight 40W for me. Engine likes it and doesn't burn a drop![]()
Never multi-vis... Straight 40 hd...
I assume you guys are talking about gas engine inboards. But for the diesel wouldn't you want to run 15 40 oil like in the truck engines?
Good point, I am personally talking gas.....would probably make a difference, and can't offer anything on the diesel.
YEA I WAS TALKIN GAS. SHOULD'VE SAID THAT I GUESS.
On my Diesels, 250 cummins, I run what the Mfg suggestsm straight 30 weight.
I've always fished with outboards, but I'm curious. Do you have to change your oils through the seasons? For example run 40wt during the summer, but then 30 in the winter. Also how often do you change the oil. In a car some say every 3000 or 5000 miles. But I think that wouldn't be the case for a boat LOL! Especially since a boat is always running "Up-Hill"
You change the oil generally based on the number of hours .... In a car, it's more the dirt that gets pulled into the oil that causes the need for a change. Not the case in a boat, which is why you notice no air cleaner LOL.Originally Posted by thetackletrap
I do change weight, depending on the weather.....as I stated earlier, I usually run the fresh oil I put in when winterizing (20W50) for a little bit very early in the season, and then go to either straight 30W or 40W, depending how soon the weather turns. Always 40W in the dead of the summer.
I gotcha, thanks for the info. I just like learning stuff.
