My boat burns about 350-400 gallons of diesel on an overnight canyon trip. That translated into $950-$1200 per trip last year for fuel. I've limited the crew to a total of six in the past for comfort. I might increase that by one more crew member to offset the added cost. As long as I can get a crew together to split the fuel, then we'll go.

As for the other fun trips, it might start to pinch if diesel goes over $5/gallon, but since our season is short, it won't keep me at the dock, but the annual trip to Nantucket might be reconsidered.....I paid well over $4/gal for diesel in Nantucket last August.

The price won't keep me at the dock, but it might make me think twice about criss crossing the bay 5 times to hit all my hot spots for bass, I may have to go out with more of a game plan and stick some spots out more then I like to. No more freebie trips either. As for offshore trips, I'm used to fishing large boats and splitting the cost, so burning 170gal on my boat and splitting it between 4 guys is still cheaper. When the chunk bite starts and the troll bite slows, I may opt to save a few gal and skip the trolling we always put in trying for those one or two extra fish.

plan on bringing an extra guy this year to help break up the split a bit. This is offshore the best way to look at this is that you have at least 10G's in this sport what is another 3-400 in the grand scheme of things. I always tend to look at the sport of fishing this way.

That point has been reached here. Far less traffic on the water than ever before. Mybe 1 in 3 charters sailing from Sailfish when this time of year is usually empty docks every day.
Our Diesel hit $4.16 and gas at $4.89... Enough where it wouldn't make sense for me to even unpickle my boat and make ready for a single day charter. Enough to keep me from doing any fishing for fun. I posted a few weeks ago about considering selling the Deep C even...
Its bad and gonna get worse. Until buyer resistance gets strong enough to drive the prices down were gonna keep getting bent over by big oil.
