What is the life expectancy of a F225 or Honda 225?

Now that the larger four stroke outboards have been out for a while, I'm wondering what kind of life expectancy people are expecting to get out of them. The reason I ask is that we have a pair of F225 that are running great at 450 hours, I'd like to know how many more seasons I can expect out of them.

Also, my cousin is looking at buying a used Honda 225 with 900 hours on it. he may put 200 hours max per season on his and is wondering what the value is of buying used with that many hours.

    Thanks,
    Larry

    Hey Larry ,
Keep using them and they will run for a couple of thousand . rick uentner is a crabber down in Newark had 1,700 hrs on his 130 before he traded it in after his boat sunk . I am not sure how many on the new motor but he has had it for a while . The ones that sit and get no use are the ones that blow up . Thats why I use " Wheatdogs "270 Te on a regular basis to keep it running for him check out the CF ad this week , its got a good pic in it . Keep using your motors and they will keep running !!!!

A guy that I know that charters a couple slips down from me has 6200 hours on twin Honda 225's with no real issues. I think with these new 4 stroke outboards you run a bigger risk with electrical issues from the salt than you do with engine failure. Of course this is with the engines being maintained and run properly.

    Spray Em Down,

flush them with fresh water from time to time, keep them sprayed down with a "good" corrosion block (wiring, mechanicals etc...) because of the salt water and keep up with good maintainence (don't wait for it to break). These aren't your fathers 2 strokes. Some of the engines that are currently used on the outboards are the same basic engines used in the automotive world, except they are vertical. Any idea how many miles a well taken care of Honda Accord gets before it bites the bullet, don't be afraid of it use it !!!!Frank

    it varies,

does life begin at start up.........or when owner takes delivery? and then of course you have maintenance.........day care, schooling, after school activities, college.....the list goes on and on. but for most people its a personal choice.
