What to do with my fathers 35 Egg?

Okay, my father has had his 1986 35 Egg up for sale for almost 2 years, sat up on the hill all season this year. It has 454's in it, I want a 30' class center console but he wont move till he sells his boat. He has dropped his price 30K allready and I dont want to see him drop it any more. The boat is beautiful has an amazing ride, at what point does it become ecomomical to replace the 454's with some new lightweight economical yanmars and run her for ever? I love the boat, just alot of upkeep, all the wood and systems a center console wouldnt have........Haha, okay how many thousand other guys in the same situation?

It doesn't. The cost of the repower is just too high to justify the expense. You can spend a lot of money on gas for what it would cost to repower with a set of diesels.

the 454's are pigs, 400 gallons on her doesnt get us where we want to go. figure doing the grunt work myself, it would cost 80K. he is selling the boat for 45K down from the 75K its really worth, it just breaks my heart.

I had the same boat for 6 years and I bought it with brand new 370 Volvo diesels. The guy I bought it from put 90K into it and I bought it for 100K and sold it 6 years later for 100K. Great boat with diesels and 220 gallons on a canyon overnighter. Put the yanmars in and I will have to buy it

Don't have many options in this market for any boats, particularly large gas boats. Either hold or take a hit on the sale. If you like the boat repower it, if you do the work should be a to save some $$, use it for a few years,if still want to make the change then resell as it will be worth more with the diesels.

If you like the boat here are some options..

go to cummins and get a set of the re-built diesels about 14k each and they have warrantees.... go to cat and check thier repower options....Daewoo also has some great little diesels... yanmars are high price but well worth the money... or lower the price... too heavy of a boat for a sail though..

The swap out from the Egg over to a 30' center console is like night and day.I end up just buying a 28' Baja cuddy centerconsole, and put my sportsfisher up on blocks. Its a buyers market on use boats and alot of people down size.Blowing 500 gals of fuel for a weekend for the avg Joe is just not cutting it anymore. My expence when from $1500 a weekend down to $800.Only problem is that I have to book a motel room now and lanch my cc boat every time I need it.Oh,still I miss my bigger boat and all the extra room, but in time I will put her back in the water to use again.

I think thats a damn good option right there. Put some repowers in it, run it economically for a few years and wait for the market to improve. When it does, then you will have a much more attractive product to put on the market with the diesels.
