(a book which, I agree, I need to get my hands on) so if it's in the book is it a Carolina boat? A production boat, yes, but still a Carolina.

    Thanks for your 2¢. [/QUOTE]

You can borrow my copy. I've read it 3 or 4 times and it gets better each time I open it. Couldn't recommend it more!

actually, the more I look at it, I think it may be a stretch to say this boat has a "broken Shear"...Nevertheless, I still think a Spencer qualifies as a Carolina boat and a damn pretty one at that. That's what pops in my mind when I see her profile, even with her not so broken shear.

    maybe a sloping shear..

    Broken shear

    hey fritz,
bubbie's got your boat looking good , ya'll splash it yet or are you waiting for the spring thaw in the creek? anyway, getting back to "broken shear" when i designed paul spencer's first 58'
he wanted the shearline transition or "turndown" to be less abrupt than what some of the other builders were doing at the time (look at that same area on a davis 47 or 58) . paul has really refined his boat lines since his "first" with a lot of help from Applied Concepts in Florida and his boats as do John Bayliss's look like they are doing 50 knots sitting still.
the Carolina "TRADITIONAL" look is kind of gone but we are in the 21ST century now and people want that space age look........ o well ,enough of my rant. good luck with your boat and lets keep this "carolina thread" alive!

Maybe not so gone....1978 updated in 2010.

If the original "Carolinian" was Carolina then the new "Qualifier" upholds the tradition without the original squirrel tracks on fresh juniper. Classic Carolina's, beauty without the silicon injections.

    Carolina boats

    hey TunaTeaser1
If i remember correctly , the 1st boat Paul built with Ritchie Howell was forplayin , then i think he built liquidator ? i cant quite remember , but i think it was his second 58' that won the white marlin open in OC?
Paul and i took a couple measures on his papa Shelton Midgette boat and we "tweeked" her lines a little , a little more flare and shazam he built a nice boat , with 3406e's in her i seem to recall she made about 37 wot, not bad for a 58 footer with twin 800's in her. guess the rest is history. speeking of classic carolina boats that looked right and ran good with a big old detriot in her, Shelton Midgette built a pretty boat! Paul builds a beautiful boat as well and i think he's still going pretty good with this current stinking economy!! wishin i had my shop full of boats under construction!!
