They had to put the fish back in the boat and run the 30 some miles up the sound to oregon inlet fishing center to weigh the fish? I guess he didnt know he was already at oregon inlet? Mr tennent has the history of warren and the manteo wanchese boat building down pat. He should write a history book on roanoke island boat building. Now having known capt r jones since I was a kid and having him bring me to the marlin club and feeling like I was traveling with an ernest hemingway type famous person. I used to talk to mr foster way back when on windy days when he could not fish. His albatros boat business and boats were confiscated by the US government during WW2 that was back in 1941 to 1945. He told me he had to fight the govt to get his boats back after the war? So that makes his boats the oldest true carolina boats still working and catching fish. He also told me that His boat was built in harkers island I believe or the willis boat works which was just before you went out to harkers island. I am going by memory from way back when? Now he told me a story that the original carolina boats were built in harkers island area and that they used carpenters that had worked for Rybovich in florida who didnt want to live in hot buggy florida any more?. He also told me warren was a few years behind the harker island rybovich broken shear carolina style. The original warren oneals did not have near the flair of the boats today. They did have the rybovich broken shear. So capt john tennet did a great job and I only know what old deceased people like capt jones and mister foster told me. For some reason I was introduced to him as mr foster and thats all I ever called him? Did you know he had the first set of outriggers in carolina? Thats what he told me.
BLIGH.....Alot of Capt Jon Tenants history is qouted from the book "CAROLINA FLARE". It would be worth it to get a copy and read the history of the Carolina Boats. Im looking at mine now. One of the best Ive read.

Funny, reading about these boats today. As a young boy I grew up on many of these boats, although they were skiffs. Raised between Cedar Island and North Myrtle Beach, I spent many a day gillnetting and pound netting with these skiffs. Many built by some of the names mentioned here. Many still in use today. But those very skiffs evolved into the sportfishing battlewagons we know today.

No problem on the location of the marlin club? Its just a friendly home away fro home

I still stop to talk old times with my friend homer {the marlin club manager and great guy}every year I take my family down there. Infact I think if you knew me? he likes having me around because I am still a lot like the old Islanders. Ace I will try to find a copy of that book? even if buddy did write it? Did you know DXr Trocki of egg horible davis is pissed at buddy now because he now has something to do with a catamaran boat company???Just what I heard the other day from a carolina style boat builder? It was interesting to see how roanoke Island for years was the place to get a carolina style boat with lotsa flair. Then jarret bay started up near harkers island and now carolina boats are being built all the way to wilmington now? Can anyone answer me if harkers island was before roanoke island on the broken shear beginning of the carolina style. that came from rybovich style.

Thanks Ace. I thought I found it on Buddy Davis's web site, but could not find it on there now??? anyway, as long credit is giving where its due.

Here is a little NC boat history I would really like to know about.... The fishing boats in southport era 1950....

I can see alot of the harkers style in these boats... not quite as old style as the albatross boats with the round sterns but pretty close. Finding info on fishing and the boats around southport in the 40's & 50's has been a hard thing, but I would love to know a little of it being close to my home port of holden beach. I've got a pretty good grasp of the boat building that took place in brunswick co. from the old shrimp boat and skiff builders from the area. grew up in varnamtown & was lucky enough to know quite a few of them, but the fishing boats history, I haven't a clue???

couple pics of the draggers being built on the waterway at holden beach, era 1950...

A master carpenter can be trained to build from jigs and plans... workers can be trained to build from a mold... engineers can figure outstanding things with today's technology and be right on the money..... but the main thing that comes to mind with an original carolina boat is that it takes a artist to create a work of that magnitude with only his eyes and his hands. the carolina style boats of today have came a long way from the original ways of doing things.... not to say that is a bad thing at all. I would be proud to have either, but in my opinion that is the difference.

I really like the the hatts, just would not consider it a traditional carolina boat in the way it was built, but it very much has the carolina style and ain't a thing wrong with that. here's a little history on the hatts I had saved from the same place, i thought you would like...
I did like, thank you for putting that up.

This where I keep bringing the question back. All these builders borrowed from each other and no doubt the market influenced what was built as in; "Did you see the sheer on that new Rybovich? I want that on my next boat."

I've been fishing around for some pictures to illustrate this, and I'll try to post some when I can.

BTW Fritz, I got my copy of Big Game Fishing Journal over the weekend and had a chance to read your writeup. Great story, and beautiful work on the boat. Thanks for taking the time to share it. I can't wait to see how it all ends up.

    Island Boat Works

I've always liked the lines of these. "Citation" and "Outlaw" are two in the Hatteras fleet that look great in my opinion. Are these strip boats? Oh yeah, "Jester" is one of my all time favorite boats.

There is a really nice book on the Fosters and the Albatross Fleet - "Hatteras Blues" is the name - it does a nice job of covering the origins and builders of the Albatross fleet, and the candy cane outriggers...

    Thanks.

Actually what I was trying to do (and this will spoil the surprise, but I doubt if I could slip it past this crowd anyway) was to find pictures of boats from other builders that have Carolina features and see how they're perceived.

Thus far the debate seems to be boiling down to construction vs. style. So I also wanted to re-inject the issue of location to get viewpoints.
