Question Water pump replacement on a 50Hp Force OB

I've got a either 89 or 90 50hp Force engine which does the job. I'm sure the pump needs to be replaced since the lower unit oil drained creamy this time. How much or a problem is it to disassemble the lower unit to replace the pump. I'd give it to the local marina shop but this is the 3rd one in the past 6 years and I don't feel they are doing the job correctly.

If the lower unit oil is contaminated it is not the fault of the water pump. One of the seals in the lower unit has failed and will need to be replaced. But while you're in there you can change your water pump too.

It's not usually hard to do if you have some familiarity with the way seals are installed, but if you don't have the proper tools and/or some finesse you can cause more problems. How comfortable are you with your mechanical skills?

He is correct u have a seal problem, the lower should be vacume and pressure checked,I dont know ur mech skills but if not done correctly it means more head aches and more money.I would recomend u take it to a pro.Your wtr pump should be replaced every 2 yrs so 3 in 6 yrs is right on schedule. If u dont get the job done till spring make sure u have new gear oil in lower to keep frm rusting over layup.

On some of the lower hp units, the base of the water pump contains the upper shaft seal, your problem maybe there. There are many sites selling outboard parts that have exploded diagrams. Look yours up and it will give you an idea of the complexity. If yours has has regular maintainance, at least it should come apart without a torch. Shop manuals on CD are cheap on ebay, get one and don't be afraid to use your digital camera as you disassemble. MartyD
