Thread: Water in lower unit- Outboard

    Water in lower unit- Outboard

    Well I was finalizing the winterizing my outboard- 2 stroke 225hp Yamaha. Unfortunately when I drained the lower unit oil I found that water had got in. (The fill screw was loose). The oil was very milky.

    My questions are how much damage may have been done? What steps should I do to flush out all the bad oil? What should my next move be???

    You can drop the lower for the winter time. Put fresh gear oil in it immediately, do not let another hour pass with out any oil in the case. The metal gears being exposed to air is just like things rusting if you leave them around salt water.

    Take it to your local dealer and let them pressure check it to find out what seal is bad, and let them reseal it. I wouldn't bank on the gear oil screw being the only source

    You can just bring the lower to them and not the whole boat if you can get the lower dropped.

    If you had no problems at the end of season with shifting and such odds are you just need a reseal and no damage has been done. 9 times out of 10 that is the case

    Another tip I will add is that it would probably be best to refill the lower, run and shift her on a hose in the driveway , then drain it again and that should tell you if in fact you have a leave elsewhere. I would get it pressure checked no if ands or butts before it goes back in the next season.

    100 bucks for pressure test, 250 for a reseal vs 3k for a lower... Doesn't make the most sense.

    You can also do the water pump at this time to save headaches
