water in fuel

I have a '05 Mercury 225 optimax on a 23' Neptune WA. When I had the motor put on they took my old water separator off and said I wouldn't need it cause the Optimax has one built in. All it takes is a few drops of water in the bowl on that thing and the alarm goes off. We have been having a rash of bad gas in my area and I have had to change that filter twice in less than a month. Mercury is proud of those filters, $40 each. Anybody know if I can run a fuel water separator in addition to the one that is built in? thanks for any help.

try this....

the boat should be equipped with a seperate water seperator-read that as a racor, since you've got an outboard, use the clear bowl style.the water can be drained at the bottom of the filter bowl....
not sure what filter you're purchasing for $40....you should have a red screw on filter in the fuel unit-it seals with an "o" ring...be sure to lube that o ring with outboard oil....also i have a trick to remove that filter....

thanks Jawz12, that is the filter I have ( the red one) they charged me 38.00 plus tax at Southeastern Marine in Whiteville. I will get one of the clear Racor filters and add it in the line, it should help catch the water before it gets to the bowl on the fuel unit.
thanks again
