    Volvo TAMD 40B

Does anyone have feedback on the Volvo TAMD 40B (165HP)? I am interested in a '86 24' rampage with this power option. The engine currently has @1600 hrs on it. If anyone has any info on this engine it would be much appreciated.. The good, the bad, the ugly, lets hear it!

I have a 200 h.p. 41A that is the next generation of that motor. It runs great but the motor does have a few issues that need attention. I feel the cooling system is marginal. The exhaust elbow needs to be kept clean as well as the heat exchanger. Head gaskets where a problem on the earlier models due to overheating but the new style head gaskets are much better. The hours are very low for that year motor and most issues will be from lack of use rather than wear. Diesels need to be run. The bigger concern should be the transmission. If it is the Volvo ms series plan on replacing it sooner than later. The ms transmission are very expense and poorly designed. There is no after market "drop" in replacement due to a odd down angle. Volvo did make a hs1 that is reported to be very good but now only available used or reman. Again check Boat Diesel or Cape Dory 28 web site forum. The Volvo motor/trans. was used in CD 28. Good luck but do your homework.

Hey well i have a 29' phoenix, with the 165 tamd 40s, i get my rpms and all but they are dog motors, and very pricy to fix. One thing i will warn you is check those zinks on the motors before you purchase the boat. Especially in the oil coolers, people tend to neglect those like the former owner of my boat. One day im running and all of a sudden the oil pressure falls fast, i shut down ran home on one motor. the cost for a new oil cooler the cheapest i found was some where around 2400 + shipping. So instead i made my own oil cooler kit. Also make sure the ignition key works had to replace both of mine with in weeks of buying the boat, i guess my surveyor skipped that part. but they are relativly fuel efficient. i had 1350 hours when i purchased mine now have 1500 with in a year...

Tryin' to be the man, my dog think's I am. marine diesel service owner

    Subject To Past Sin's,

Anything you buy with that age on it is going to be subject solely on the maintainence or lack there of, it recieved during it's life, doen't matter what brand it is. Those are old engine's regardless, any neglect back then is amplified now. Those engine's are from an older era, they are going to smoke and not have the power of today's engine's, they were very good on fuel. They are pretty simple and easy to maintain, aswell. Vovo is proud of their part's (no secret there), they painted them green for a reason. Frank,SeaPower

Understandable that anything with age can have potential issues. although we have owned boats with Cats and detroits, the cats were great parts readily found here in the US. Avg. time to wait for parts was 1 week. Detroits we have in our hatteras we usually have parts within 24 hours. The volvos i waited three weeks for a couple of o rings. thats the only downfall there. Also i feel with the long wait there is a overpriced part list.

unfortunatly these motors also are practically all o-ring sealed and put together. they do smoke and sometimes a pain in the ass to start....

Had a look on friday with Skunked. Engine has had a lot of big maint over the past few years. As you were saying LMP, sounds like the parts for the Volvo can be hard to come by and on the pricier side.
Gotta love the burn rates and the range on that little diesel!

they have great range thats for sure, one thing that someone could do though is purchase an extra motor, i seen one when i bought my boat for 1500...at the time i wasnt thinking to buy it but it would have paid itself off with just the oil cooler...

The single best thing you can do is have a certified Volvo diesel guy go over it before you buy it.

Big Sweede is eactly right about the cooling system. I've found that on all Volvo's. I had a TIMD9.6 in my headboat. As long as everything was clean and right with the cooling system she'd run 180-185 degrees. Even the matched belts wearing a little bit on the water pump and you'd start seeing her climb. I put over 11,000hrs on that engine and never did anything except change filters and oil. But she was a 585 cubic inch engine putting out 180hp@1600rpms.
