Big Sweede is eactly right about the cooling system. I've found that on all Volvo's. I had a TIMD9.6 in my headboat. As long as everything was clean and right with the cooling system she'd run 180-185 degrees. Even the matched belts wearing a little bit on the water pump and you'd start seeing her climb. I put over 11,000hrs on that engine and never did anything except change filters and oil. But she was a 585 cubic inch engine putting out 180hp@1600rpms.

cooling systems on the volvos are a little tricky...meaning,you really need to run volvo coolant,it has no silicates.what happens here is these silicates actually bond to the tubes in the heat exchanger, causing an insulation, which means,no heat transfer, engine runs hot...use strictly volvo coolant and distilled water only...those old school 40b's...well...the "o" rings everywhere were a problem, they will spring cooling system leaks...be careful in the front of the engine-timing case area, these are known for corroding, end result, huge oil leak !! as a bunch of guys allready stated, parts are big money !!!...old engine there...real old...there was a change in the cylinder heads on the 40's too, older heads had a "pre cup",this would drop on occasion, taking the engine out with it...personally,unless that rig was real cheap,as in almost free,i would be walking away from it...those old 24 rampages were not known for their great ride, hence the name "slampage",also, that rig is a cored hull, balsa core too...and man that can mean trouble...big trouble !! balsa turns to saw dust when it gets wet, meaning,if anyhting is drilled into that rig,it needs to be sealed and sealed correctly,or big time problems are gonna develop...

If this Volvo turns out to be the source of power in the next rig ("slampage" or other), it sounds like getting ahold of spare parts as/if they come reasonably available is the way to go (just in case).

Balsa Core... / ....shes such a pretty and spacious ride!

Don't think anyone is trying to talk you out of it, your decision. I don't know why, but boat's seem to be a "matter of the heart". I used to have that disease, but see them now for what they are, machine's. I used to have customer's ask me for an opinion about a boat they are thinking about buying. I say USED to have, because I don't get involved anymore in that area. You can tell them to run away as fast as they can and they will go ahead and buy it anyway. Funny thing is they'll come back later after the "honeymoon" and complain about the purchase. It's like bringing your girlfriend home to meet your parent's, really doesn't matter what they think, you're gonna marry her anyway. Good luck on thre honeymoon. Frank,SeaPower
