I have a pair of the 8 foot Digital Antenna brand on my boat and they have served me well. I am told by others in the fleet that it has a strong signal from a long distance. They are hooked up to Icom radios also.

Shakespear makes a digital style also, never used them but they are an upgrade over the standard ones you can buy.

    Good luck,
    Troy

Recreational VHF radios can only transmit on one antenna at a time. Some people install 2 antennas, in case one gets broken. In that case, you will either need a switch (which IMO is not a good idea since it diminishes the output energy), or if you want to switch antennas, you have to manually disconnect one and connect the other.

Note that the poster above has "radios" (plural) -- I don't think he was suggesting that he uses 2 antennas on one radio at the same time. Good luck,

    Game,
Nomad is correct, I have two vhf's and each is hooked to a seperate antenna and also is mounted on an extension mast for even further height.

    Good luck,
    Troy

The basic Shakespeare 8' (5206C) will work fine but if you want the glossy look and one that will resist UV longer look at Shakespeares Galaxy line. Don't worry about adding extensions to get a few feet higher, it make very little difference.
