VESSLE DOCUMENTATION

HAVE ANY OF YOU GUYS WHO PURCHASED A BOAT THAT WAS DOCUMENTED BEEN HAD BY THE CG WHILE WAITING FOR THE NEW DOCUMENTATION TO GET BACK TO YOU? WHAT IS THE FINE?

OUR SITUATION IS WE ARE WAITING FOR OUR DOCUMENTATION AND IT'S SUNNY OUT. I'M NOT WAITING 7 TO 8 MORE WEEKS TO GET OUR "LEGAL" PAPER WORK BACK. WE ARE GOING TO CARRY A COPY OF THE STUFF WE SUBMITED AND BILL OF SALE AND A COPY OF THE RETURNED CHECK SO DO YOU GUYS THINK THEY WILL HIT ME HARD PROVIDED WE GET PULLED OVER.

NOT GOING OFF SHORE FOR SEVERAL WEEKS BUT WAN TO SHAKE THE BOAT DOWN WITH THE NEW STUFF WE PUT ON OVER THE WINTER.

WHAT DO YA THINK

THE PEOPLE AT THE DOCUMENT OFFICE ARE NON BOATN MISERABLE PEOPLE. I WOULD OF SAID HOW I FEEL BUT THEY KINDA GOT ME BY THE BALLS. IT WOULD SUCK IF THEY "ACCIDENTLY" LOST MY PAPER WORK AFTER I SAID HOW I FEEL. DAMN THEM

33,
When I purchased my boat out of state, I needed to move the boat between states.

I was told by the documentation company, and my insurance company that as long as I had copies of the bill-of-sale and all documentation paperwork, that I would be OK if pulled over.

I was not stopped, so never had a chance to see if it worked.

A buddy of mine, got a temporary registration + sticker from Maryland, which required him to put registration numbers on the boat. Once the documentation was completed, he returned the sticker, and removed the numbers. MD still requires a sticker (different one for documented vessels).
You may want to check with DNR on this one!..Hope this helps!

If you are not going to use the boat commercial, and the bill of sale is titled in the state you live in, register her and put the state numbers on. You will be legal untill your documentation comes in.
If you are going to apply for a NMFS Permit, WAIT till you recieve the documentation. DO NOT apply for the permit under the state registration number. If the previous owner was permited under that doc# ,the permit will be linked to that vessel and owner. To change it back to the doc# you will have to call NMFS, and there is only one person that has the authority to change it in the system. Could take days or weeks. First you have to get someone that knows what your talking about!

I asked for expedieted service with an explanation of foreign travel. The office was good enough to get me my paperwork quickly. They had said though that under normal channels that the receipts etc would"serve" as my doccumentation for domestic purposes until it arrived. Expedited was about 5 weeks.
I know you don't think so but they really do care down there at the doc office... Just so many new checks and steps they need to take its just very delayed.

THE 7 TO 8 WEEKS DOESN'T PISS ME OFF. HELL WE SHOULD HAVE PUT IN THAT LONG AGO IT WAS THE FACT THAT THEY WERE HUFFING AND PUFFIN WHILE SHE LOOKED UP THE STATUS OF IT. NOT TO MENTION SHE WENT ON AND ON ABOUT HOW IRRESPONSIBLE IT WOULD BE TO USE A VESSLE THAT DIDN'T HAVE THE PROPER DOCUMENTS. OBVIOUSLY NOT A BOAT OWNER. WE ALL NO WHEN THE SUN COMES OUT OUR MINDS FLOOD RAPIDLY WITH SALTWATER.

ANYWAY I THINK I'LL CARRY EVERYTHING WE GOT TILL WE GET THE REAL PAPERWORK. I WOULD THINK THAT WOULD BE ALRIGHT.

I have documented my last two boats, in fact I am waiting on my documentation to be sent to me on my new boat now. It takes at least six weeks to get this done. As long as you have your bill of sale and the papers showing that you are in the process you will be fine. I use a documentaion specialist that charges @ $275 to take care of the process. She provides a document that will let you travel outside of the US while you are waiting for your documentation.

All good advice. You will be lucky if you get it done in 8 weeks. It will probably take a lot longer to get it back. Just make sure you get it registered in MD ann dpay your taxes (if you keep it in MD).

I just did this back in December. The documentation agency I used gave me a temporary, I think they called it a cruising permit. Anyway I had that, the vessels old documentation paperwork, bill of sale and copies of what we submitted and the Coasties were fine with it.
If the boat previously had a tuna permit you will have to call NMFS and get that info deleted out of their computer before you can get one in your name. You shouldn;t have to wait for the documentation paperwork to arrive since the number will be the hull number, and that doesn;t change from one owner to the next.
