    a very untimley death

this is a boat,it's in for a repower...manifolds and risers did this engine in...terrible shame too - boat's spotlessly clean, engine was spotless as well - very low hours too

the risers were removed and resealed - big mistake ! some one used a silicone sealer on the gaskets...engine was hydrolocked - usually, when these engine hydro lock, the small high torques starters, they break off the block - hard to believe huh ?
this one,it hydro locked, the teeth on the ring gear are gone, and it's got a bent rod...
out with the old,in with the new...
we only use complete engines - no long blocks,no remans,no options - new or nothing.i take a merc sterndrive engine out,a new one goes in...
    this rig got a new 5.7MPI "magnum"...this rig flies ! !

gas inboards - exhaust systems have a finite life - usually around 5yrs,that's it...flushing will not extend this...

Jimmy Wanna See What A Hydro Lock,

Really can do? Have it happen with a hydraulic starter! Had a V-12 900hp diesel many years back, that used a hydraulic accumulater system plumbed to the starter. Water in the cylinder's, hit the start solenoid, piston comes to the top (with valves closed), can't compress liquid, soooooo rod comes thru the side of the block. No big deal, it was a $100,000.00 engine back then, never mind the hole that had to be cut in the side of the boat (while in dry dock at shipyard)to get the engine out and replaced. Water in cylinders= a very bad day! Yep, most lessons are learned the hard way. Frank

    Risers

Jawz - You're 100% correct about the fixed life of risers. We had a pair of 5.7 Marine Power's on our 26 side console Chris and sure enough we learned the hard way that risers are a 'wear item' and should be replaced at the 5year mark in spite of fresh water cooling and flushing.

BTW is Marine Power still at it? What sold us on those engines were double filters and starter right on the tail end where you could get on them easily and double belts on the front end. Those engines were a real treat to work on - MV
