Updating an older style boat

Well, I'm liable to take a little heat for opening up this topic, but I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on what projects could update the boxy appearance of the late 80's vikings.

Realizing that no matter what you may do to the boat (within reason), many will say she won't be as good or clean looking as the newer style, but I'd still love to hear your thoughts. For example, there are a lot of old Hatt's running around that look simply amazing (a lot of money), but I figured there may be some subtle updates that can be done to some older styles to make them look more modern.

Specifically, I'm thinking (day dreaming) of a new half tower and removing the hard line bridge windscreen on my viking as a good first step towards improving the asthetics. This is a bad market to sell a vessel anytime soon, so updating her to make me more happy may be a fair route for me to take. Here is a link to sistership that looks very similar http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listi...oat_id=1899593

So good or bad, what other thoughts or ideas would you have to share that could help me modernize one of these boxy older boats? Where would you spend your first dollars?

GoBoater,

As far as I can tell there's no such thing as a perfect boat, no matter how much you've got to spend. My idea of a "dream boat" is one that's ready for sea, then go fish the "snot" out of it. How could it get any better? Frank

remove the.....

wind screen, OK. New half tower, Right On! But you want it to be updated with an entirely new appearance, paint it! A bright white topside and a colored hull would really make a difference.

if your rig looks like that...

you should be proud! the newer vikings had like a fade out stripe on them down here and thats the only thing I'd do besides take the boom off the front.

window shape

you could possibly put new frameless windows thaat are a bit more modern than the existing ones but obviously it will still have to be insinc with the rest of the boat. also another hull color or even painting the whole boat in a brighter white will make a difference.

good luck

boom - meaning davit for the tender? I actually use the dinghy virtually every weekend for the dog in some capacity. Don't know if the alternative (putting on a sea-ray style raising and lowering platform) would be for me. I need the dinghy though. what about elminating the bow rail to de-clutter the bow?
