UPDATE: 42' Bobby Sullivan

Went to Bobby's shop yesterday Oct. 26th. Thought i would show you guys some progress.
They have started the frame work for the bottom going forward. and also the stern sides going forward, showing what the tumblehome is going to look like up to the helm. This tumble home will disappear at the helm and this is where the flare will start to show all the way up to the bow.
If you look at the pics, Bobby sets up stations at all diff. levels and degrees to get the shape of the boats bottom and sides. He then puts up one of three "batten Boards" if I understood him correctly. To show the deadrise of the boats bottom from the stern to the bow. These boards get closer to the keel towards the bow to make the sharp entry.
Once this stage is done, he will set up the next set of " Batten Boards" to make the sides of the boat to the mid way point, then the last sets of Boards go up to finish the flare. All these sets of Batten Boards will all come off the boat they are not built in, they are only guide lines , like connect the dots!
The haul is then block at all points and glued. I will show you that stuff when it happens. Should be at the end of next week. Enjoy!!! Keith

Thanks for the update! Really enjoy watching it happen. It is amazing to me how simple the idea is of basically lofting her in the air and filling in the space.I don't mean to make it sound easy,I know it's not,but it is very, very, cool!

holy shit that things has a flat ass-end. have you NC guys heard of deadrise? please tell me he's going to run a big keel, otherwise that thing will fishtail worse than drag slicks on a wet and oily street corner

Damn Deckie--- Custom Carolina builders never thought of that. Shit, what do they know--- bunch of back woods shad fishermen couldn't built a decent boat if there livelyhood dependend on it. Of course, with the slick calm water always present off the NC Outer Banks, I recon there's never been a need to worry about seaworthyness

I would suggest you do some research on Bobby Sullivan and/or Carolina boat design

glenn, never said that sullivan didnt build a good boat. I know O.I. gets snot nasty, hence the creation of the sharp forefoot and carolina flare. I know plenty about carolina boat design, and boat design in general for that matter. all I was pointing out is the near absence of any kind of deadrise in the aft section. while that should make for an extremely roll resistant and stable fishing platform, every boat I've fished on that had a transom similar to that made you think the tail was gonna swing around to the front on a following sea. I've fished on and studied plenty of carolina designs, so dont be so quick to judge. and dont think its lake atlantic down here either. Our rough water is a bit more tricky than yours, methinks

and fish, I have. 10-12 in a carolina hull, as well as 10-12 in a bertram (17* deadrise). I felt safer in the bertram.

42 custom carolina

The north carolina builders have been building boats for decades, all of there deadrises are practically the same. Y'all just haven't rode in a Carolina boat built right. The ride all depends on how the bottoms are laid out and that is what differs between the builders and why you had that experience, and you never said if the boat did spin around. Did it ever fish tail or slide? There is a reason why we all have to wait more than a year just to get a slot for the build or even two. Bobby and the chosen few that are still building boats for the last 40 years obviously do not have a problem with any seas you can throw at them. If they did they would not be around. Yes there are many builders but only a few that know how to build them the right way. Come take a ride, when finished, you will soon change your tune about a horrble following sea boat.
I will be posting some more pics this week. The stern will be done along with the set up of the second stations for the side frames. Enjoy....

Gotcha Deckie,
Yep, I guess we all have different opinions and theres nothing wrong with that. I also have ridden and or operated both Bertrams, Oceans, Henriques as well as Custom Carolinas and just the opposite of you, I feel more comfy in custom Carolinas than any of the production boats. Just my opinion. BTW the Henriques was terrible in a following sea, but she was still a great boat. A wet boat but a great boat. Some builders here have more dead rise than others, but in my opinion not much is needed when you get into larger vessels. Put some good power in her and she will go on through without wollering. Still only my opinion!

I'm with you fish skipper. Everybody has an opinion. I have owned a few production boats. After a few mistakes, I decided to build this boat.
