Find out what the width of a 1000lb slob bluefin is and then add 2 inches for good measure. I think that 24-30 inches wide is pretty normal for tuna doors but I am thinking that I would rather have a big ole tuna door that I could use for any monster fish than one that ended up being 2 inches too narrow. Or just get some 18 year old strongbacks and let them winch the fish into the boat!!! Good luck on the project!!!
By the way... Capt Jay has the sickest charter boat on the east coast as far as I am concerned!!!! Just a beast!!!

Would going too wide effect the structural integrity of the transom?
Not unless you have outboards of outdrives hanging on the transom.
If not sure, consult the builder before you start up the chainsaw!
Mine is 24" wide, big enough for an 848# blue marlin so far.
The whole piece lifts out, so no snags, hooks, latches, etc to worry with.
Its the best thing that ever happened to my back.
It can never be too wide...only too narrow. Call merritt's boatworks in Pompano Beach, Fl. and ask their measurements.
30" wide is considered a large door.
you just cannot start cutting holes though.. look at frames, wire / plumbing runs etc.. think about backing up.. , rough weather at the dock even putting a 'new' so to speak pull on her let alone bonking the dock going to the fuel dock..there is a bunch to putting in a door.. a block ntackle rigged properly on some boats is all that you need. think hard on strength and location when planing a door.. they are nice though.
ps: hatt., merritt, intrpid, heriques, jerseys, to key west hulls have put lots of thought trial and error as well as susses in doors so you look real hard at how they shut gasket and build theirs.. great time to grab a beer and walk the dock .. see what you like... and what will work.
