a true CLASSIC!!
so i was reading something on another site about classic boats. . . what makes a classic? can you predict a new boat being a classic? things like that.
the number 1 boat mentioned as a classic is. . . can you guess it??? so, for the board, what in your eyes sets one boat apart from another and makes it a true classic?? |

I would say SeaCraft and a classic has to be a boat that 10,15 years from now still looks great and is admired by all, a great hull, good setup is what I feel makes a classic.

well, IMHO, the best classic would have to be the 31 bertram. classsic hull, unbreakable, HELL OF A FISH RAISER. . .you just cant beat that boat.
some of the most beautiful boats i have ever seen are restored 31s. . . and even some that have not been restored, just meticulously maintained |

Do you mean just fishing boats? Because I have a few classic boats of mine own from the 50's and 60's and 70's. I posted about my red "Volksboat" awhile back actually. I remember a few of you guys really liked it!
I'd say for most recognized classic and antique boat, if you were to ask any Joe Shmoe, it'd have to be a Chris Craft. Which is a given anyway. And for the most recognized classic utility boat, if you were to ask any guy off the street? A Grady White. My vote for the best boats though, would have to be Boston Whaler and/or Grady White for nice utility boats. The best classic/antique boats from back in the day I would have to say are the, Glasspars, Larsons, and Correct Crafts. (Ski Nautiques.) I would think to make a boat a classic, it has to have a great hull design that holds its shape, and great deck set up. And still get compliments 35 years later. But just like any car too, the owner has to take care of it. You can't beat the crap out of a boat daily and then leave it outside, on a bad trailer, uncovered. It's funny, but 99% of the trailers I see under boats are mal-adjusted and will make a hook in the hull within about 3 years if it's a new boat, and usually already has in an older boat. No boat will last 10 years with bad treatment and still be useful and function correctly. But look at Boston Whaler and Grady White. I know Boston Whaler has been around since at least the 60's, and I know Grady White has been around for even longer. I think late 1940s almost. I see many, many, old whalers from the 60's and 70's still in everyday use. I still see a few old 60's and 70's Gradys being used too. Grady actually started out making wooden boats. I know there are a few of them too, that have been restored and are still being used. Well, you asked, so that's my answer! lol. Oh, and for classic/antique boat information, this website http://www.fiberglassics.com/ is hands down, the best on the internet. Not only do they welcome fiberglass classic boats, but wood and aluminum too. And they also have a great link section to other websites for specific boat companys and a great old brochure collection, free for the looking. And by the way, that wasn't an advertisment for that site... That's member experience! lol. Bronco.

The little hulls were pretty well covered. I have a really hard time defining any GradyWhite as a classic - the hull design has changed so many times you can't define a single model for any length of time. the BW Outrage lasted many years, making Chiropracters very happy.
47' Buddy Davis has to be a classic bigger boat. Many were made and still killing around the world. For looks, fishability and reputation any Merritt or Rybovich. the 53' Hatteras for being the beast at the time. Of course i am also biased to one on my signature ![]()
