Oh yeah! I forgot the Owens! Thanks for that one, Deep. Another few good companys were Dorsett, Bell Boy and Skagit. (The last two are left coaster boats only, but they were good. It's rare to find them on the east coast.)
I think we all hit the nail on the head here. All the boats listed can be, and are classics. I know what you mean about the hull designs of the Gradys, but that's what making a good boat manufacturer (and a good anything for that matter) someone willing to change there mind or make a different desision. The changing hull designs tells me that they're on top with technology and willing to experiment and maybe take some shrapnel for it. That just puts them even higher in my book. Some people may not like Grady Whites because, well, we all know why.... LMAO! They're almost a big inside joke with a lot of people because they're what everybody and their brother has. But they are very good boats, none the less.

my choices..
here goes boys...
my choices for classics... bertram 31-the open bulkhead flybridge, the original...great rig,any wetter you would need scuba gear-still one hell of a hull-ran the hell outta my old rig-never scared in it EVER !!! made a trip home from the 500line of the wilmington 80+ miles from cape may, late october the weather forcast was way off-started blowing 30kts dead west, seas were 8-10' with the occasional 12' thrown in for fun...10+ hrs to get home....that hull was unbreakable !!!! second classic-a 23' sea craft center console, one of the sweetest riding small boats ever made-i've restored a few for customers-couldn't believe the amount of time i put into those..... third classic- 43 merrit probably one of the most "fishable" boats ever made-absolutley beautiful!!! fourth classic....gotta lump these all together-that would be the classic carolina hulls-the buddy davis, jarrett bay, sonny briggs, tillets and the list goes on..... those are some of the prettiest and most sea worhty rigs ever built-very few others compare to those....... that's how i see it in my world...... ![]() to me what defines a classic is the hull shape and design, never changing-think about this,if the hull changed how can that be a classic ??? a manufacture changing a hull shape(grady white) usually indicates a problem and a refinment-for a better ride, but in my opinion that drops the classic factor-it changed....sort of like coke-remember when they changed the formula, than they switched back-kinda lost it's charm huh??? if the carolina boats dropped their signature bow flair-would they be classics anymore ??? the old whalers never changed their hulls-still the same shape since they were made-this is the small ones only we all know they changed and came out with the "outrage" series, but the 17 montauk is still there as well as the smaller whalers-definatley classics.... gradys went from a lap streak hull to a smooth hull side and now to a euro transom style...too many changes to be considered classics-my opinion-don't wanna rattle anyone's cage, just as i see it.....

No votes for a Cabo 35?
I may be way off here, but I believe that the Cabo 35 will eventually earn it's place among the classic production boats.
Any comments? SeaBiscuit |

My opinion of a Classic:
Old school Harkers Island net boat- Wooden from bow to stern, stick steering in the middle, unmistakable at first glance!!! Might even have a little corn kernels left from the duck feeding up the river!!! |
